Gday, well nasty noise and oil light came on so i killed the engine Pronto! got the RACQ to pick me and the bike up and take us home. Well the oil pump and drive gear are cactus. So i gota replace em. Just wanted to check if the part numbers were the right ones and if its the right part number for the updated drive gear. Did Buell/harley actually change to the better material? the dealers here just dont know what its made of! Typical. But im going to include some picks so people know what im on about.
Part number 26318-88a? Is this the updated number with better material?
Part Number 26204-91A . Is there a better option to this pump, something with a better scavenging effect and who stocks it? And just another Pic for an overall look of the bike because, well for the hell of it

Ugh, that stinks. There is an upgraded pinion gear, but unfortunately, that's what you had that broke! That's the first new style gear I've seen let go. Thats a tuber (X1), right? So the XB pump would probably be an upgrade, but I don't know if it will bolt on (probably not). And the XB had a stealth upgrade in 2006 I think. From there, the next upgrade was a completely new oil pump in the cam cover, but that doesn't retrofit. Dig up some posts by WhiteBuell... he figured out the problem and machined the mating surface of his oil pump to address it. |

Cheers Reepicheep! Well with a bit of digging and a few phone calls ive established that part number 26391-06 Which is the xb 06 drive gear will fit the earlier xb's and as such should fit the X1. So Ive ordered the 06 part and a new oil pump which should arive in the next few days. Here's to hoping im correct. But all the same ill photograph and document it and put it up here on BWB. In the near future a mate will be doing his and as he is looking at doing a lot of performance mods we will look into how we can put a late model XB oil pump with a few mods into his S3. They use the same drive pinion gear so im sure we can figure something out. Also ill lookup posts by WhiteBuell. Im gona have to start a parts number list for tubers that corespond to other models for improvements! Would come in very handy knowing for sure what will fit what and the parts number interchangeability without running on internet chinese whispers lol. |

That would be very helpful and appreciated Lurchandy! For the record, the broken gold looking pinion gear in your picture already was the new part. It started as a race part for the XB's, then became the normal factory part in 2006 (for good reason). So somebody had already been in your X1 and upgraded it (a good thing). The normal failure mode was for that pinion gear to wear unsymmetrically, get down to near a knife edge on one of the teeth, then it shears. The shedded parts grind up the remaining teeth, and do other damage the cam cavity, which can lead to an engine killing death spiral. Hard to tell from your picture, but it looks a little different, like maybe the gears were all ripped off at once. Which makes me wonder if it was a seized oil pump or something. |

Jason: My oil pump seized when a couple of little needle bearings got sucked into it, and it stripped the drive gear just like yours. Is your pump seized up or does it spin fairly freely? I recommend you take the pump apart and see if there's anything in it--there might be something bad going on somewhere else in your motor. rt |

Yes oil pump is shot. You can see the teeth are warn and with broken pieces. It dont turn real good either. Got a new one in my hands at the moment. drive gear should arrive tommorow. Also the gold colour is from the flash i think because it isnt at all gold coloured in the light of day. Also I know that the only person to have worked on my bike has been me since dec 2002, and I dont believe they ever went into the cam chest in the previous services they did before that date. Do need to get hold of them and get a copy of everything they ever did to it for my own records. I did see in Whitebuell's post he talked about the alignment and hardness. Ill be checking the alignment carefully and shimming as necessary to get it spot on but wont go as far as getting it hardend. Will definantly check for needle roller condition but think it was just the warn gear pieces catching in the pump and siezing it up. Ive pulled it apart and found some of the metal pieces caught in it. In fact it is a rebuildable pump, only HD no longer sells the parts only the full pump. Need it onroad asap so that's what I bought. It'll be getting a full topend freshen up towards end of year, with cams, headwork, and a few other bits and pieces. Will recheck pump and gears again at that time. |

Here is what the old pinion gear looks like... The new one looks like gold, very nice looking piece. I don't believe the new style pinion gear was available when WhiteBuell did his project, so he had to harden the stock gear. As you have access to the newest factory part, you don't need to harden it. On my picture above, you can see the wear marks on the old gear, that was the normal failure mode for these things. Mine was pretty far from failing still, but not so far that I didn't replace it. Twice. (once on an M2, once on a XB9SX). My uly has the new style gear... but I should probably check it now that I think about it, particularly since I already have a cylinder off and the engine rotated down. Meh... there goes another two hours... |

The oil pump drive I put into my X1 is part number 26391-06 . It's the latest drive for 06 xb's on which will fit previous tubers. Put mine in yesterday and runs sweet! |
