I am brand new to this site and have found some very useful information. I am getting back into drag bike racing after having been out for a few years. I raced for many years at my home track in Sacramento as well as division 7. My plan is to race Team Firebird at my new home track in Phoenix as well as division 7. Although my last bike was a ZX9r full race I have a different plan now. I want to race American so I bought a 2001 Lightning X1. My build plan is to stretch it ASAP then add a air shifter, shift light and a two step. Here is my question: I have read that an early S3 swingarm will fin my X1 and I need to confirm that. The S model swingarm is much easier to stretch. I also wonder if my brake caliper will fit. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

welcome to the site swingarm - yep, it'll fit brake caliper - yep, it'll fit. I have a S3 that I race with AHDRA and have done the same modification Only thing you'll need is a longer brake line, but those are cheap. good luck on it all and post up some pics when youre out there racing! |

Also..I have done this numerous times and if possible it is easier for fabbing if you have 2 steel swingarms..cut the first one even and then add your stretch with the second and all the caliper, adjusters, etc. are all lined up..anything over 4" be sure to brace-reinforce it as it will seriously flex... |

anything over 4" be sure to brace-reinforce it as it will seriously flex..." good call on the bracing I had lucked up and found an extended buell arm with bracing for fairly cheap (hundred bucks). check the AHDRA website, ask on there about a spare arm/extended arm. Someone might have one for a good price |

I have did all the above listed items to my 01 X1 if you need help with anything let me know. When you get into the air shifter I would definitely spend the extra money on a electric engine kill rather than air. Also run it using a relay to cut power to the coil rather than grounding the coil to activate kill. I have all the wiring diagrams you could ever want or need. I have a old steel swingarm laying around if your interested it's not stretched but I could get it done the same place I got mine done. I am moving out to the west coast(CA) in the spring maybe I will see you at some track. |

Team Flash, Welcome!!!! Great to have another X1 drag racer on board. I run a 1999 X1 converted to carburetor with a strut and 6" extended 1"x2" S1/S2 style swingarm. My swing arm isn't braced intentionally as i run a rigid strut, a dot tire, and no wheelie bar which works great for the power/performance level my bike is at (stock displacement, best ET of 10.58@125mph). i just extended my swing arm with internal plugs and some 1"x2" tubing. as stated earlier, it is best to extend it just past the bend as far forward as possible to maintain the caliper mounting slot. There were actually two versions of the early 1x2 swingarm. the early version has the 1x2 arms welded to the swingarm pivot tube, the later version have a brace ahead of the wheel from the arms to the pivot tube. Not sure if it really makes a difference for a drag race bike, but the road race guys prefer the braced swingarm pivot. Good luck! |

I really appreciate all the support and am very excited to get back on the track. Hurricaneleah, do you think 6" is enough stretch or more so is 8" too much? I have made arrangements through Williep13 to buy a swingarm and get a stretch completed. I just need to decide how much stretch is enough. |

For our current power level at about 110 rwhp, 6" is just about perfect. The bike will just lift the front wheel a few inches on launch.....very, very rarely will it come all the way up. My only concern going 8" would be unweighting the rear tire too much. Might be ok if you have more power or are running a rear suspension. You might want to check AHDRA and or AMRA rules as well for maximum wheelbase for hot street class.....its been 7 or 8 years since i built my bike, but at the time we were building a chassis that would be legal for the hot street class. |

My plan is to run our local track series and Division 7 NHRA. AHDRA doesn't come out west except to OR which is a shame because I have won King of the Hill (Brackets) twice when they came to Sacramento. I got my air intake on this weekend, got it smogged and registered so I was able to go put some miles on it. Ran great, got the front end up a few times but mostly wanted to make sure nothing would break. First test n tune is Jan 6th and I can't wait! |

Maximum wheelbase length fully adjusted for Hot Street is 68in... I ran S1 converted to max 68in. which put it at a 13in over swingarm...worked fine for high horsepower launches...I also converted it to mono shock application for suspension adjustability... |

I went 8" and the swingarm is done. I hope to have it next week and will buy all the parts I need for the conversion. Thanks to Williep13 for all he has done to help me with this. My first test-n-tune is this Friday the 6th then we have a bracket race the 14th but the first bracket team race is the 28th. I need to get the swingarm on and race ready between the 15th and 28th. Lots to do but it sure is fun wrenching on this bike. Too bad my oil pump blew a gasket or I would be all set for this Friday. Oh well I will have it fixed by then |

Swingarm has arrived and it is a good thing because the bike (Rider) was slower than expected. My best time was a 12.2 @ 107 mph. My 60' time was 1.9 so I have room for improvement. Here is a picture how the bike sits today but not for long.

12.2, yeah you got some more on the bike as it sits, but it'll get way better with that arm on there. funny, when i saw the pic I thought it was Willies bike ( minus stickers) |
