My 2006 Ulysses had been running great all day, then after about 50 miles of all kinds of riding, it started to make a "gronch" noise after pulling in clutch and downshifting. Going up through the gears the bike ran great, no noise, with smooth shifts. The noise sounds like a rattling of loose parts from the lower front of the primary case. After getting it home which it did without stalling, it would not re-start or and I couldn't get neutral. When I hit the starter button it makes a rapid clacking sound like the starter isn't connecting or the battery is too low to fire the bike. Battery tested 14 v and held charge last week during voltage regulator replacement. Now it won't start, or shift gears, or select neutral.
I just had the Voltage regulator and front isolator mount replaced last week, now this. Any ideas?

I would pull the primary cover and have a look around in there, my guess is the issue will be obvious.

Sounds like the primary chain adjuster lost its shoe.

Thanks to Bike_pilot, and Harleyelf for your thoughts. I haven't had time to pull the inspection cover or primary to root around just yet. I'll report with any findings once I do.
I forgot to mention that the bike tries to start it'self when I turn the key on and pull in the clutch..I've owned 2 Buells and a half dozen Harleys, and none of them ever did that. The clacking sound is still being made, but I am not pressing the yellow start button, just pulling in the clutch, and it tries to self crank and start. However, it never turns over or runs, it just cranks (clacks) away. Any furthur suggestions before I plunge in?
Looks like I will be riding the Wide Glide for a awhile, but I'll really miss my Mule.

HHmmmmm?
Starter solenoid/bendix stuck engaged?

Ive seen it happen on a HD and you end up driving the starter as you ride. This will Burn up the starter.
Be sure to unhook the battery before "going in" , You dont want your fingers to take an unexpected ride around the ring gear.

I hereby revise my opinion. Before going into the primary case, I would remove the starter and bench test it.

I don't know about the Ulysses but the M2's need the primary cover pulled (I believe) to pull the starter.

True that. The mounting bolts are inserted from inside the primary housing. You may find the pinion gear has an issue that prevents it from turning the clutch basket.

Pull the primary cover, not just look into the primary inspection hole. You'll have to back off the primary chain tensioner so it comes off easily.

But if the adjusting shoe has indeed come off you may be able to see it through the little inspection cover.
