Well installed another set of cams today.
I did notice that the ones i've bought came off a later bike, they are more grey in colour compared to my original early ones. Also the later (Grey) ones have a much smoother casting surface. Cold it be possible they are a different grade of metal with a better cast, maybe this problem was forseen ?? Original camshafts, brown-er colour

Its not the oil that makes it look a different colour as i cleaned up both sets of cams after these pictures were taken. |

My guess wouldn't be so much a materials change as much a heat treating change. I've seen this before in auto engines where the cam wasn't properly heat treated, and thus soft and failed early. Caught in time, this shouldn't effect the life of the engine, replace it and move on. |
