CCW anyone??
Totally off the subject of bikes, but....anyone interested in getting their Ohio CCW (Ohio's permit to Carry Concealed Weapon)?
One of the security organizations I belong to (tech security, not Gainer Marine style security -- LOL) is hosting a CCW class in 10 days, on Sunday November 20 from 8am-8pm. One of the least expensive but solid courses around at $120 -- includes everything (even food!) except your ammo. That means: your class materials, instruction, the certificate, a copy of the book "The Ohio Guide to Firearm Laws", your range time, use of any rental gun you wish to use, your eye protection, your ear protection, continental breakfast, lunch and drinks throughout the class. In other words, the ONLY additional expense you will have is your ammunition, of which you'll only need 100-150 rounds for the shooting competency portion.
The course is being taught by Ken Hanson, an attorney that is very well-versed in Ohio's handgun laws and has published a highly regarded book (now in it's fourth edition) on Ohio firearm laws. And yes, he's not only an attorney but also an NRA Certified Instructor for Home Firearm Safety, Certified Pistol, and Personal Protection in the Home.
Most courses that the wife and I have looked into run in the $200 range for the single-day course, so this is one heck of a deal!
The course is being held in Delaware, with Blackwing for the shooting range portion.
There are still a few openings so if anyone's interested, let me know ASAP and I'll get you hooked up!

Love the bike! Just enough of the color to look great; I love the current adv. bike themes of less paint/plastic and more frame/motor. Time for some 50/50 tires!
I've had a hell of a time getting my dual-sport. Several folks have failed to produce a notarized title. Quite aggravating! |

thanks mike. i tell ya, i freakin love this thing! although to do it again i'd get the black "beak". thats alot of color up front with the painted fender...
i think the heidenau (sp?) scout 60 tires are in my future  that rear 150 tire looks bad a$$!!
oh and i ordered the caribou 26l for a tail trunk. still haven't made up my mind on the paniers though. looking at wolfman or caribou (pelicans) any advice? |

Arg you're getting the Scouts too?! Those are my favorite 'big dual sport' tires. I saw a brand new set on a brand new GS800 up in Alaska; they looked amazing, and are said to be extremely capable on and off road for near 10k miles!
My problem with the pelicans is that they are all side loaders (with the exception of one model, but they're HUGE). A lot of adventure folks swear by soft luggage such as the Wolfman stuff. Much safer (won't break your leg or sub-frame) and often more durable in a drop. I love my black aluminum panniers on the Uly, but for my little dual sport, I'm going with the soft stuff. I will only be going with the rubberized/pvc-coated type though (like the Ortleib or Wolfman). I've tried endless amounts of canvas/nylon type bags that stated they were waterproof, even with the paper thin rain covers, and they all leak/seep. |

wolfman now has hard luggage mounting kits for their racks. maybe i'll get the wolf set & buy mounting kits so later when i figure it out i'll have options.
problem i have with the aluminum etc (besides breaking your foot off)is how big the rear end gets. it has a really narrow tail and with the muffler high on the right it makes them suckers stick out for miles!
it's narrowed down to the tkc80's or the scouts. reports like you said are better road performance & wear out of the scout. some say the ultimate set up is scout rear & tkc front. i'm gonna do my best to wear out these scorpion trails by next summer. they blow in the dirt! and slippery in the wet. speaking of which.... i LOVE abs brakes!! |

Yup, I've got them on my Uly. They're no better on dirt than any other street tire. The wider 180 and 190 widths are dual compound, and I've never had issues with them on pavement wet or dry. They also last a good long time.
I think I'll be switching to pilot roads next though, for even longer mileage. |

I am down to a single Buell.
(There is a minor size difference between these bikes...)
Just got her home and already pulled all the previous owners stickers off:
2008 Yamaha WR250R with 3k miles. 30hp, fuel injected 250cc with a 6-speed tranny, weighing in at 300 lb wet. More power than I thought a 250 could have; I'm VERY pleased. And the best part is 'street bike' service intervals! 3k mile oil changes and 26k mile valve adjustments! None of these dirt bike style 10 hour oil changes and 20 hour valve checks.
It's mega tall right now, but the suspension has built in height adjustment (not speaking of preload), so I can (and will) drop it about an inch. Motor is stock. I'm told that an exhaust and power commander really opens it up, which boggles my mind.... It's only a 250cc. Not in a rush to upgrade.
Meeting an AdvRider on my day off this week to explore abandon roads in his neck of the woods out east. I'm PUMPED!!! |

Just set the suspension up for me! Lowered it front and rear about a half an inch and fixed the preload. That's all it took to feel completely different for me, I'm now very comfortable on it, perhaps too comfortable... I was throwing the thing around on the wet roads last night and this morning more aggressive than I probably should have been. Going out for my first 'dual sport ride' momentarily. |

It is a dirt bike! With street bike maintenance intervals and a license plate! The ultimate WIN WIN!
Went on one hell of a ride yesterday!
This thing has 75% worn tires and it still did thing I wouldn't think possible; crossing 2' deep/wide ruts full of wet leaves and mud at an angle while going up a steep climb. Went airborne more than once, and never once upset the suspension.
I still have to get used to the gearing and high revs necessary as I occasionally lugged the thing, but overall, I'm blown away by what it is capable of. This bike is amazing.
Oh, and despite ringing it's neck for the most part, I still averaged exactly 70 MPG! |

I went with the reflective North America (as opposed to the non-reflect and/or USA only) and yes, it comes with the outline as a single stick, then all the states and Canadian provinces separate that you apply as you wish.
You're going to want to get 50/50 tires to enjoy gravel. Even then, I'm a street rider at heart, and deep large gravel is no fun. In fact, the only time the lead rider rode away from me on yesterdays ride was right at the beginning we hit a true gravel road. Deep, squirly gravel. I was going 50 mph and he was running away from me. It's just unnerving. The whole time I'm talking myself into it: stay loose on the bars, weight the pegs, just let the bike move around under you... but it still was not enjoyable. Once we left the deep gravel and hit the dirt/mud/leaves I had an absolute friggin blast, and to my surprise, kept up with them at their pace!
There is potential for a slower dirt/gravel ride this Sunday afternoon. I shoot you a PM. |
