I have a 1999 Buell X1 Lightning and looking for assistance for troubleshooting tuning in the Detroit area (specifically South Lyon). I am the original owner. Currently the bike's engine light is coming on and when ridden, the engine "boggs down" and looses power. I have recently replaced the ignition switch (OEM) and rear shock (Works), the problem had started before that and I was hoping the new switch would fix it. I do have a cable and ECMSpy, but have not check for error codes yet. To be completely honest, I am a novice when it comes to mechanics. I would really just like to find someone competent in tuning Buells near me. |

As Harlyelf would tell you, it's either spark, gas, or electrical. A couple of things to check... 1.) Make sure your battery cables are tight to the posts. It's a 10mm wrench. 2.) Make sure you don't idle your bike much, if you do that, it fouls the plugs really fast. 3.) Make sure your plug wire are tight to the coil and the plugs. 4.) Make sure your intake seals are good. The proper way to check that is either propane gas or mapp gas UNLIT and run via a hose to each intake seal at each head. If the bike speeds up, the intake seals are bad. Check those things and report back. |

Good advice, Steve. I say Fuel, Compression, and Wiring to folks who ask "Why won't it start?", Chris has a running bike with room to improve. For that I say re-set the TPS, and check it with ECMSpy to see that it moves smoothly throughout the throttle range. Cleaning the contacts of all the fuses and relays is always good form. The O2 sensor could be plugged with soot. Or one or both fuel injectors may have issues. Has it ever run right lately? That's an important clue if it has. If it's an intermittent issue look to the coil wires about six inches from the coil where the fuel tank pinches them. Run new wires all the way from the module if you have to. And buy a service manual. You've gotten by for eleven years without it, but now you must become that guy who knows how to tune Buells. (Message edited by harleyelf on November 11, 2011) |
