Well I'm 3 feet from the finish line and I'm stopped. Just to fill you in, a year ago my front motor mount broke on I90 in a driving rainstorm outside of Cleveland Ohio. While attempting to pull the broken bolt, I managed to crack the head. Seizing an opportunity to make a project out of a relatively minor issue, I went with an NHRS motor mount (from Al at American Sportbike) a new isolator kit (also from Al) a stage 2 1250 kit (with one new head) and the updated oil pump drive gear. Well between work, a boat and some other stuff (kid's college visits, kid's travel hockey, work....) I manage to slack off and am just finishing the project. The good news, she runs, and no strange noises, smoking, leaking...... She even idles, although roughly. So all that done, I recheck all the torque, and get ready to reset the TPS /Check timing via my trusty (?) old VDSTS that I bought long ago when Daves was still at Appleton. I can't find the laptop I used to use, so I dig up a netbook, the Keyspan usa-19hs, download the software, and fire it up. To my surprise, the ECM (Race ECM) connects first shot and then I proceed to go to the gauge screen. Then we head south...... the connected status changes to disconnected, the connect dialog comes up and after a long time the dialog tells me the ECM isn't supported Just for background I've been working with Serial ports since VMS days (PDPs, MicroVaxes.....) right through to modern Sun/Intel/Cisco/IBM/HP....... I actually debug code for embedded systems, so I'm very comfortable with the whole serial port setup thing. I have the keyspan adapter set to the recommend settings (Bulk transfers, 63 FIFO Buffer size, Faster communication). I've also tested against an older laptop with a built in serial port. I can see from the keyspan debug window that the port is sending and receiving traffic, so I believe we're working in that respect. I can post logs of the communications So the big question (thanks for reading this far) Does this software (VDSTS standard Version 3.01.B47) work with a Buell Race ECM? DO I need an older version of the software (I know this used to work for me)? Anyone have a working solution? Should I punt and build an ECMspy cable or get one from Al? I hear the software is difficult to come by these days. Thanks, I could sure use a push to get this thing back on the road for the remainder of the riding up here in NY (yes I'm crazy and I do ride year round!) |

http://mods.buellxb.com/index.php/viewcategory/59. html should get you to ECMspy. |

I have a race ECM on my 99 S3 and use VDSTS for TPS resets. I know mine needs to reconnect when you go from gages to active settings. It sometimes requires a couple of tries, sometimes involving turning ignition on and off, but it has always worked eventually. You do have the required adaptor in the connection to the bike? Also Al is very familiar with the VDSTS, so you may want to ask him. |

Donald, Thanks, good data point to know it works for someone. I have the original kit and I have a null modem adapter (crosses tx and rx on the serial) and neither has worked for me. I even tried going back to the software I got when I bought the kit, no joy "invalid comm port #". I'll try it again and see what I come up with |

As I recall (it's been a while) I did fool with manually setting com ports and eventually found one that worked. You have loaded the software for the usb to serial adapter? |

Don, yeah, I can see the communications in the debug weindow from the keyspan assistant. The bike and computer are talking , eventually though the computer says "I don't understand what you are" At leas t I think thats what's going on. I'll give it another try this weekend. I did mange to get the ECM spy software and have a cable on the way so I can go that route also. But I'd really like to make the VDSTS stuff work. I think I'll snd the comm port trace to technoresearch and see what they say. Are you on XP, Vista, 7 or one of the Palm derativatives? |

Mb, I'm an XP guy and use on 99 S3. I do have, but never used, ECM spy. I've been told that the same cable will work with both. Good luck. |
