I thought some might find Shawn's perception of the F1 Race weekend interesting. I sure did. http://shawnhigbee.wordpress.com/2011/10/28/erik-b uelll-racing-ebr1190rs-given-the-tool/ |

It's interesting to see they opted to swap suspension bits for AK20's and a Penske rear. Any idea why? I haven't been following the 1190RS as closely as I should have, but my understanding was that only top shelf components were used. It is a $40k bike, afterall. Any idea what Shawn didn't like about the stock stuff? |

He thought the suspension from his 1125 would work better on the rough track, according to rodrob. |

Ah, so it was a swap from his 'parts' bike? I didn't pick up on that, but it makes sense to take advantage of familiar valving. Wonder if the curb weights are similar enough that spring rates transfer over. |

I don't think they had enough time to set up the Ohlins units. From the video on crotch rocket tv it sounds like Shawn rode it for the first time (out of the box settings) during practice. With so little time, I think he just went with what he knew so he could focus on getting acquainted with the bike. |

A couple of thoughts: They swapped for AK-GAS, and that's a significant step up from AK-20s. The gas charged dampers are really, really good, and I don't think it's necessarily a negative reflection on the OEM Ohlins kit as much as a comment about just how fantastic the Traxxion (and Penske) stuff is. There's also rider preference. Just like some of prefer Michelin, Dunlop or Pirelli, some riders prefer Ohlins, some will prefer Traxxion over Ohlins. The 1190RS has a lot of premium components, there's no doubt, but it's not top-of-the-mark across the board. No bike selling at a mere $40k could be. Case in point? Ohlins offers a professional gas charged fork and it runs nearly $10,000 just for the forks! Clearly, those aren't what ship on the 1190RS. Don't underestimate the Traxxion stuff until you have ridden on it. I have the AK-GAS kit on my 1125r, and it's very special. On our bumpy, cut up tracks, it helps inspire a lot of confidence in the front end. It's amazing stuff. |

You're right about the gas AK's. I've been sick for a few days (and pricing out suspension upgrades of my own), and I read AK20. Ignore my error... Either way, I agree with you on the AK gas carts being relatively even competition for the OE Ohlins setup. |

A few American dreams come true in one weekend. Erik Buell Racing of course. Just as exciting was reading about BUELLers becoming an instant pit crew. Shawn getting a ride on the bike that he had looked forward to for so many years! oooooooRAH! |

It wasn't a swap from his parts bike, but from his DSB race 1125r, which has had goobs of track and setup time. Given the lack of time, we felt it would be better to eliminate as many setup variables as possible. The unfamiliar Ohlis forks being one of them. The videos will elaborate. Working on them now. Also I just got back from riding the bike at Keith Code's 2 day race clinic on the same track. Once I got used to the bike, I was running the fastest lap times save for Keith's two private pro students. BTW, this was in a sea of BMW 1000RRs with quickshifters and traction control, a couple of which were built yo over 200 HP. So while I did not get to ride the Ohlins on the track, I can say that the Traxxion/Penski set up felt great. I never even thought about the suspension. I did ride the Ohlins on the street and on the new pavement of the Angeles Crest Highway, they were great, but on the stiff side. So I can see that on a rough track, they might not be ideal. |
