I bought a VH muffler. I tried to fit it to the stock header (I am using a 'Y' bracket)& the hanging points on the rear of the muffler do not line up to the bike. They are 3-4" toward the center of the bike instead of close to the left frame rail where the engine/trans mount tabs hang. If the collector on the VH had less of a curve in it, it seems all would line up. Earlier a guy stated "that is the way they all fit". But if I can't get the rear hangers to align with the muffler, I can't secure the back of the muffler to the bike. I am not sure what he was talking about. Anybody know? BTY: I talked to VH about this and they assured me I have the right model of muffler. And note, the stock one aligns fine |

Any one have a photo of how their VH muffler is attached in the rear to the bike on an X-1? I am trying to dx rear hanging issues. (Message edited by x3rs on October 31, 2011) |

there is a different bracket than the factory "z" bracket for the rear mounting. It looks like a "U" sort of. This bolts to the V&H with the dog bone and the other points should line up exactly with the mounting holes in the cases. Do you have that bracket? Kilroy |

I have the stock bracket & the one sent with the muffler, but can't see how it helps me. |

I can't imagine this being 3" to 4" off. Is there any chance that the V&H elbow is just bent? You use the dogbone to attach the "u-shaped" bracket to the can. Then the holes in the bracket should line up pretty much exactly with the mounting holes on the bike (after taking the stock Z-bracket off the bike of course) There should be a fairly easy solution to this. Can you snap a couple of pix and post them up? |

You have removed the stock rear "z" bracket, and bolted the V&H "U" bracket in it's place, right? You aren't trying to attach the V&H bracket to the stock Z bracket, are you? Did you remove the header and replace the port gaskets? It is a very bad idea to mount a new muffler to the bike with the old port gaskets in place. You need to use new port gaskets and let everything hand loose before trying to get everything aligned. |

1) As for the VH elbow being bent. I actually sent the first muffler back to VH. They put it on their jig and then sent it back as "in line". So bent is probably out. 2)Yes changing header gaskets is a good idea and one I will do if I ever get the muffler close to fitting. Did I mention I have a 'new' header with only 25 miles on it. Stock header. And, the stock exhaust bolts up fine to all points. So the header can't be bent. 3) As for the brackets. It is getting cold here so my wanting to work on the bike is ending. But this week end (no time during the week being an 8-5 guy)I will take photos and post the ABC's of my tries. That is if it is not snowing and not 30 in my garage. I have been looking this thing over for a year now. |
