Just bought Nissin 17mm master cylinder for Buell resto I am doing. This is the updated version (circular reservoir) found on todays sportbikes. Question- can I use DOT5 fluid per normal Buell specs? Top of reservoir says DOT4 only. | ||

Yes. They put DOT 4 on there so you don't put DOT 3 or less. | ||

DOT 3 is like DOT 4 as they will absorb moisture unlike DOT 5 which is silicone based. Also 3 (284 F) has the lowest boiling point and 4 (311 F)is higher and 5 (500 F). Brake systems may not be set up to take certain ones. The seals and gaskets may not work with all 3 types. My bottle of 5 says it is for all drum and disc brakes and mixes with all brake fluids but I would flush well to remove all trace of the other fluid. If you have any of the other fluid you would still have the lower boiling point. Just my 2 cents worth. | ||

Many thanks for the help and info! Anyone else had good luck with 17mm radial master cylinder? I believe the earlier tubers used 5/8 bore in mc which is approximately 16mm. So I tried to match it as close as I could with the new radial. |
