Woah. Is that ice/slush, or just wet in the tire tracks?

How'd the track day go? I was busy watching insanely powerful airplanes flown stupidly close to each other. The Thunderbirds are *amazing* to watch. And I'm incredibly jealous of those who don't have to worry about things like "gravity." When you can accelerate going straight up...

Also, any further details on those arguably bogus tickets from the Buell Rally?

The track day was fun... I was much slower than usual as last time I was out there I wrecked...plus I was on brand new tires which didnt give me the confidence my old ones did... oh well.

I think there was only one wreck. it was in the second session of the beginner group. overall it was a nice day. definitely a big turnout; Beginner group had about 30 people in it, intermediate had about 26 or so, then Experts had 15-20 I'd say (didnt count the expert group) I was running 1:13 laps... not great, but I was still a bit skiddish.

I'm a bit sore today. I am definitely out of shape.

That IS ice and slush. It got progressively worse as I climbed higher. The paved road to the crest has lots of salt and sand on it.

I had bought a pair of VFR saddlebags awhile back, and started mocking up a set of custom mounting brackets tonight.

The rear footpegs will be removed, to provide a mounting point. No passengers.
The bags are 35 liters each, and will hold a full face helmet...

What do you think?

Well, the tickets from the Rally were paid in full. The points didn't transfer so I saw no point in spending more money to go fight em.

Adam, I would say that a 1:13 on your first time at the track since your wreck is pretty good.

The Track day was great. I got down to a 1:03 on my STT. Then took Brandon's 1125 out and ran a 1:02... sigh. I guess horsepower does help. I think it may be time for some top end work. See about getting to 100 on the ground with stock displacement.

Nearly wrecked twice in the 4th session. The tires on my bike are toast.

Got some good photos too!

Bartimus: I like those bags on it! Have you considered painting them to match the bike?

Daschunk: Very nice photos!

If you're doing engine work, have you considered a short stroke 12? Or is that more than you were planning to spend? I've heard that a motor built with the '9 stroke and bored out to be roughly 1200cc displacement is just an absolute monster - torque everywhere, and the revs of the '9. I don't think it's cheap to do, though.

I missed the track day... though I think it was worth it. The Thunderbirds were performing at the Kirtland open house, and were absolutely amazing. Also, the B2 Spirit is a truly beautiful aircraft. : )

If I had my druthers I'd do a short stroke 12 in a heart beat. The problem is that I have a 12 right now and don't feel like trying to find a good 9 motor to play with. I am hoping I can get a pipe, flow the head, lifters, roller rockers, cams, and dyno tune it this winter. If that doesn't get me 100 hp on the ground it will be damn close. I also need an extra set of wheels. Pilot powers are good but I am over running them now I think. Time for some Dunlop GPAs or Power ones.

Ed, you sure have a pair of balls take his 1125 out... I would be scared sh*itless to take someone else's bike out on the track knowing how easy it is for an accident to happen.

Having said that, I would love to take my 1125 back out, but I dont want to chance wrecking it.

and definitely nice photos! I'd share mine, but they are horrible, so I'll refrain ; ) you can tell I am not into leaning as much in these.

I will Paint the bags black when I get all the brackets done. Eventually, if I keep it, I'd like to paint the bodywork, bags, and wheels toyota demon blue.
The CR screen is on only because I had to take it in and get the new stator installed. You know, that R fairing would probably void the warranty.

I know Jody. Thanks again. It'll be this winter at the earliest for the wheels, sell them if you need the cash. All my Warhammer minis are hopefully being sold here quickly.

As far as riding someone elses' bike I try not to think about wrecking it and if I do I believe in the "bend it, buy it" idea.

Wheels? : ) How much?

I keep thinking about mounting a set of Pilot Road 3s or similar on the 1125, since the bulk of my riding is commuting or touring. I could throw a pair of Q2s on a separate set of wheels for trackdays.

Hopefully next summer I'll actually be in town for them! I did *way* too much travel this year.

Q2's? Why not the Pilot Power 2CT? Cheaper and almost as much grip.

I was running the Pilot Power 2Ct's on my track bike on Sunday... they were not very confidence inspiring for me. So far, the only ones I have really liked were the Michellin Pilot Pures, and the Dunlop Sportmax GPA's. Im thinking of getting a new set of one of those for the track bike and replacing my Diablos on my Buell with the 2CT's when they are ready for replacement.

I got my last set of Q2s for around $230 to my door plus $60 or so for installation at Cycle Gear (wheels off the bike). I haven't found the Pilots much cheaper.

I was running the Pilot Road 2CTs previously and didn't really care for them. I understand the Powers are lot better.

If you know where I can get the Power 2CTs substantially cheaper than the Q2s, I'll listen. : ) I've accepted that I'm going to be getting 5-7k per set of tires that have enough excess grip that I shouldn't ever have any traction issues without being really stupid.

I would love to go back to the Dunlop GPA tires again, but they are only offered as a front tire now. Maybe I will try the Power One 2CTs? I have heard good things about them.

Order them from Moto Authority and tell him you are using them for your track bike. He will get you a "racer" discount (25% I think). I got my set of Pilot Power 2CTs from Steve for like $210, and he only charges $40 to change if you bring him the wheels off of the bike (not including racer discount.)

Ah, interesting. I'll try that. How do the Power 2CTs compare to the Q2s? They both seem to be very good tires.

Personal experience with all mentioned tires...

IMHO: Q2s are better than PP 2CTs. Faster warm-up for track and stickier. The Power Pilot has a thicker carcass (heavier and longer warm-up time) and is meant more for the road than the track. Both good tires but for slightly different uses.

Agree, PP 2CT tires are better than PRs...from a performance/grip standpoint (by design). The compounds are different.

PR 2 and 3 tires are great road tires. The 3 is considered one of the best rain handling tire on the market and has better "feel" than the 2...both have thick carcasses and neither one is intended for regular track use. I have run PP, PR2, and now PR3 on my K1200s - very happy with these for "sport touring" use. Long lasting with decent handling and grip.

Power One tires are good on the track... a bit temperamental w/r to pressures. For the track get the proper compound and not just the "over the counter" version.

Oh...my favorite (so far) for the track... Bridgestone BT003 Pro Race...

Gorgeous weekend, anyone riding?
I'm heading up 14 to santa Fe to work on Kim's Jacuzzi, then may head up to Mora for a quick look at the foliage.

Was thinking of maybe riding up the high road Sunday, and doing the TP to TA route, then back down the high road...

if only I had some extra dough. I would swipe it up in a heart beat! It would be a great bike for Stacey.

On the note of selling things, would anyone be interested in a trailer? I have a 4X8 trailer that I am trying to get rid of. I was using it to haul my track bike to and from the track, but I am going to be investing in another one. If you are at all interested, P.M. me and I can send you pictures, specs, etc.

How heavy is the trailer? I'm sort of looking for one, but my tow vehicle has a 2000 lb tow limit, with "trailer brakes strongly recommended past 1000 lbs."

I have a few bites on it already, but if you are interested, I can give you a call/ email if it doesnt sell. I am supposed to show it to my boss's husband Thursday. Russ also expressed an interest, but I have not heard back from him yet. Ill keep you all informed.

I rode down through Kingston and over emory pass on my way to silver city and hwy 191. Only to have my stator go out for the third time while climbing the pass. I was unable to make it to civilization before it died and had to stash the bike in a ditch and head out on foot. F#€<ing Harley!
Ended up spending the night on a bench in Glenwood and hitching to Socorro, then home to get my truck.
Finally have it home. Going to bring it in again and demand a 2008 stator. This is bull crap!
<sigh>
