Motorbike, I tried to follow you on the one bolt in the top bracket but I didn't understand it. I tried something else and I'd like to hear the collective's opinion. So, same front bracket, but for the rear what I did was put a couple of layers of gorilla tape on the end of the ECM, then ran a zip tie down through the original bracket mounting hole, then through the ECM mounting hole (which is now beneath the bracket) and cinched it up tight. This way it should experience no 'free' vibration and the tape should protect the ECM. Looks like this:
I left the zip tie untrimmed only so it was clearer on the photo, then I clipped it.

I was hopeful when Froggy wrote that this ECM thing is a non issue for 2006 models but checked mine anyway. I have a 2007 seat and it was rubbing... Seat and ECM have rub marks and the wiring was chaffed. I bent the metal ECM support bracket down out of the way and made a thick leather backing for the ECM. It lays nice and low in there now. The leather prevents the ECM from contacting anything. I wrapped a second piece of leather around the wires... All held together with zip ties. The support block (with a spacer instead of ECM) is still there to support seat. Will post pic soon... |

Here is the ECM relocated slightly, mounted on a backing of leather which prevents it from being able to rub on anything hard... the yellow arrows point to zip ties and the blue arrow points at the seat support block mounted at original location (ie the original front ecm mount point) only with washers taking up the space the ecm used to...
I wrapped a second piece of leather around the wires to protect from further chaffing. |

Never had an issue on my 07 with the factory-installed spacer under the front bolt.
When I updated to the 09 engine, wiring harness and ECM, after the first long ride I noticed I now had a problem. The CONNECTORS are what's noticeably larger on the 08-up ECM. The seat was pressing on the front connector and had already cracked the sealant around the plug on the ECM. I took a piece of scrap steel 1" x ~1/16" material I had lying around and made this:
I bolted it at the rear using what looks like a spare threaded hole in the battery support box and rested the front on the seat block. This provides a good 1/8" clearance from the bottom of the steel bar to the front connector, and keeps the seat off the rear connector as well. Not real pretty, but it works. |

Good solutions Growl and Hugh. Very helpful pictures and explanations. Thanks. I'll monitor my ecm and hope my 'cruder' solution continues to work. If not, I'll be looking to do something like you guys did.

I've got the sister to that one and she seems to be holding up just fine. I did go ahead and mummify the ECM in silicone tape (thought I saw a hairline crack) and I added the spacer block in addition as well. If I still manage to kill the ECM then I have to lose some weight before spending any more money on the Uly. |
