Just hours to go before Buelltoberfest, and the digitizer goes on my Zumo 550. I know its a fairly common issue on them, but I've had mine since 2007. Now I need to figure out how to get to Georgia |

What exactly is the digitizer? I have the 450. Is it just the screen? Will it be replaceable |

It is the part of the screen that registers your touch as input. Mine thinks I'm touching it when I'm not, as result it either starts browsing the menus when I don't want to. This weekend it started acting up, nothing major, but today it started sticking, it keeps holding down in a certain spot, so if I try and click something else, it won't register.

Yep, $30 on Ebay, there are guides on ADVrider and Zumoforums. It is fairly simple. Just the timing that sucks! Court, got your message, I think I will be able to manage, hell it just adds to the adventure! I am in Valhalla too, I am working at Westchester Community College.

Oh god, I'd use an iPhone before ever using a Quest again! A chill went down my spine just thinking about it. |

Froggy, just use that gray matter between your ears and remember how you got to my place before, or heaven forbid, read a paper MAP, so that you can be here for Thursday's BBB program. YOU CAN DO IT! |

All I remember to get to your place is that there is a long big ass highway, then we suddenly stop and we are there. Perhaps if it cold, dark, and a thunderstorm, I might not be able to see the road again and somehow make it. |

My Zumo 550 just started doing the same thing. Couldn't get it unlocked until I arrived home to my security location. Nice to hear I should be able to fix it myself. |

Need a new GPS? I got a Lowrance global map 100 for sale. But the software is made before XP. and the maps are around 30 years old, and it takes 10 minutes to turn on, and batteries only last 2 hours, but besides that it's fine.

registers your touch as input. Mine thinks I'm touching it when I'm not oooooh! it keeps holding down in a certain spot, so if I try and click something else, it won't register. mmmmmmhuhhhhh Now these are problems that become normal as you age. Don't worry Frank, You will get used to it! In your case, being young and single, perhaps having a real(non digital) girlfriend might help. Do what you can now, because after you hit fifty.....all bets are off!

Froggy, $30 for basically a "new" screen? Garmin charges me $200 every approx 40,000 miles to repair my Zumo 550 because my touch screen (or digitizer as you put it) locks up and will no longer respond. They've raped three times on this in the last five years. Most recently was just last month. Could you please do a tutorial (with photos if possible)when you replace your digitizer? I'm tired of getting "raped" by Garmin every couple of years because their product fails on a regular basis. Thanks |

Debueller: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=52 8905 You aren't replacing the whole screen, just the digitizer. They wear out over time, it isn't a garmin specific issue. My phone hasn't had a working touch screen in months, and I can tell its going to happen on my tablet too soon.

It is highly unlikely I will make it that far in life. Take out a life insurance plan on me, I'll join the 27 club

Maps are about and useful and reliable as a carb. There is a reason they haven't been used on any production cars for the last 25 years. Hell, they even make fuel injected lawn mowers now. Carbs are dead like the Beetles and Ozzy. |

FWIW - I thought the digitizer on my ZUMO 550 had gone out too. I ordered one from eBay after doing my research to make sure I got the correct size. (There are 2.) I installed the new digitizer. Pretty easy, just have to take the time to study all the online how-to's, so you know what to expect & how it all comes apart. It worked perfectly as soon as I had it back together. The next morning. Not so much. Unless I'm missing something or did something wrong... I think my ZUMO case is distorted or warped from sitting on the car dash all the time (when it's not on the bike). It works so-so now. Most of the time. Problem now is, that it's really sensitive to how the screws on the back are tightened... Anyone that's having trouble with the digitizer, might first want to just separate the case halves, and make sure that all the crud is cleaned from associated parts & then reassemble. If it does the same thing... try loosening the screws & see if that doesn't fix your problem. It did for me. I wish I would have tried just lightly tightening the case screws before I replaced my digitizer. I suspect that would have solved my problem without the added trouble or expense. |

Maps are about and useful and reliable as a carb. +1 Maps and carbs make about as much sense as sundials and air-cooled engines. Oh, wait a minute... |

I finally got around to cracking it open, I couldn't get the digitizer to respond correctly anymore, and I probably made it worse with my attempts to fix it by mashing my thumb into it. The screen has some stuck pixles, so I went off to ebay this evening and ordered up a whole new screen with digitizer preinstalled. $34, free shipping from the far east. The same seller had the digitizer only for $10, so even that repair is dirt cheap. Replacing the whole screen is less involved than just doing the digitizer, similar to how it is easier to change a headlamp assembly than to change just a bulb.
