My uly seams to make new noises all the time. Its kind of a smorgasboard of tappets, pings, vibrations you name it. Whats more seems to come and go. Always purrs along on the highway for though. My bike has 30k and has plenty of power and in second gear will float the front end easily. Averages 45 mpg. No oil consumption to speak of and its a kick to ride too. So I been ignoring it since it was that way when I got it 3k ago. What im wondering, coming from super quiet almost electric bikes, what if anything should we be concerned of? Can we share our thoughts on our beloved Buells noisy character? |

Mine is like a poorly-tuned, Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine mounted to a paint shaker. I was concerned until I rode a friend's. It was the same. Like you noted, things are fine at cruising speed. |

Wear ear plugs and you won't hear any of those noises. |

Check your plastic. My airbox lid seems to like to rattle loose from time to time. |

I wear earplugs when riding and so am always surprised at the mechanical orchestra I hear from the engine when setting idle or checking oil. But it's running fine and oil looks good so I ignore it. Someone said lots of noise is made by the cam gears backlash which is constantly back and forth with the uneven idle cadence. |

I always notice the scary sounds after I read a thread about a crank failure, or when I change helmets. Then I get used to it again. It comes and goes with ambient temps, engine temps, brand of oil, and ambient noise. Ride next to a big concrete barrier some time and you can *really* hear it. |

One of the reasons I like heavier non synthetic oil. With a shot of Lucas additive even. When idling cold does it sound like marbles in a blender.....or bolts in a dryer? |

Having owned sportsters before owning a Buell I was used to the topend noise.I'll never forget when I got my first Buell(X1) and took it to the mountains. That noise got louder on the corners.I never leaned my sporty that far over & the topend noise was bouncing back off the road.I fixed by switching to full faced helment |

I have found the noises change with ambient temperatures. The stiffening of the rubber brings out all new vibrations and noises as does cold oil and cold fuel. The cooler oil in the shocks also transmit different sensations. |

If I can't give you a mental image that makes you twitch, I'm simply not trying hard enough. |

You had me at "mental image"! I'd give you a twitch if I had Damnut's wiggly guy in his profile. |

Maybe too much 5.56, 7.62, chain and wormdrive saws, hammering...my Uly sounds fine! Can't hear women either. (Message edited by Eulysses on October 07, 2011) |

Every time I take out my earplugs, I am amazed by all the racket. Apparently there are a lot of things bumping into each other in there. It has been that way since day one but runs as good or better than new. |

Sorry, this is called thread life support. It's when a thread has died and yet keeps racking up a post count. I guess talking about rod knock it out of the question? |

I hear bad things happen when the balls touch. More so when they 'skip' or 'slide', even though well lubricated. |

Indeed. I have ram balls mounted to my top tree, handle bar, and fairing stay, and I had a clearance issue with the balls on the handlebar hitting the fairing stay balls at full lock. It almost caused me to dump it once in a parking lot. |

I test rode a new BMW K1600GTL on Wednesday. It's "too" smooth IMO. I'd rather ride my paint shaker..... |

My wife claims that new noises come out of me all the time. Ear plugs take care of that for her also. Doesn't faze me in the least. What's a guy gonna do. |

My wife has quit worrying about the noises that come out of my body, well, except for the snoring. Now she worries more about cleaning up after said noises. |
