My X1 is up for an oil change and reading all the horror stories about what a worn oil pump drive gear does to the motor, I figured I'll take a peek and see how it looks. Are the steps outlined in the FSM complete and accurate or there is an easier way to get close enough to the gear to inspect its condition? Also, should I plan on changing it regardless of the condition or replacing the piece is a lot more involved than just inspection. Thanks in advance. |

just changed mine out @15k miles on bike. glad i did. deep grooves worn in drive gear. can try to post pic of worn gear if ya want. i *think* you can inspect by dropping the oil pump & using a mirror to look up in the case. not bad to change though. between the FSM & Buellistic's how to #101, was easy. here's a thread on what could happen and changing it. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/476 23/433883.html |

It is very easy to change it. I just bought a new uly oil pump. It works better on the scavenging side and i put the new bronze gear on when it was out of the bike. Very easy job indeed. (Message edited by preybird1 on September 30, 2011) |

I've got a brand new bronze gear if you need it. Still in the original package, opened only to inspect. Bought it from Al for my S2 motor, but it doesn't fit the S&S pinion shaft. PM me if interested. I'll sell it for whatever Al charged me, and I'll ship it free. rt |

Thanks for the input. I'll take a look at it when I drain the oil. |

RT are you putting in an S&S motor, or just the crank assy? |

Kalali: I've had an expression of interest from another member for the gear; if he decides not to buy it, you're next in line. Blks1i: Just the crank is S&S; cases are stock HD. The motor had an S&S bottom end in it when I bought it. rt |

I changed mine just because, and waited to the end of the riding season to do it. That way I was able to cram 4-5hrs of work into a 2 week period, LOL. That also allowed me to get the necessary gaskets, tools, ect and have them on hand before I started. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions. Dave |
