Ah, if you've been riding dirt for over 20 years, and have a good number of hours annually, I take back most of what I said (at least in the context of a bike in this thread - my comparisons are still fully valid).

You'd be fine with an 1125. It may not be the best option, and I still think that for the requirements you've given (maintenance included), an XB would be a better bike, but an 1125 should be within your ability.

You didn't specify you had 20 years of riding dirt. You said "a good amount of experience riding dirt bikes." That, in many cases, can include "Dude, I totally rode my friend's dirtbike like 4 TIMES!!! I'm an awesome rider, I can handle anything!"

You also sound older than I think most of us (me included) realized. : ) Someone in their 30s or older is in a somewhat different place than someone in their teens or early 20s, which is usually the age group asking questions like this.

So, pick what you want. You shouldn't have too much trouble with an 1125.

However, I still think, based on what you've said, that an XB would be a better bike. I'm personally quite partial to the XB9 over the XB12 - it's a ton smoother and revs higher. Lots of people prefer the low end grunt of the '12.

Another perk of the XB Lightning (or a Ulysses) is that the riding position is very dirtbike-like. You're mostly upright, can get on the pegs easily, and really toss the bike around. I quite enjoy taking my XB down fire roads (though lately, my gf is taking the XB down fire roads & I'm potting along on the 1125 - which is not NEARLY as nice on dirt).

Or an SV. But I really like the XBs.

Curtis, if you've been riding dirt bikes for over 20 years then you have plenty of motorcycle riding experience. In your posts you appear to be mature in mind, so from that it's a good bet you will not be doing silly things with any motorcycle. Your hand-eye-mind coordination with regard to motorcycle controls is already well developed. All you really have to do is develop your skills and timing for street riding a much faster bike.

If the above is all true then your choice of bikes can be widely expanded. Although I still would not recommend an 1125R, it doesn't seem like you would just kill yourself on one! If I were you I would go straight for the XB12R. But a 600cc supersport will probably be fine with your apparent skill level.

I thought you were a very young, inexperienced guy with almost zero riding experience. Sorry for not keeping up with the posts.

Motorcycles are far too dangerous. Take that money and start saving for a light sport aircraft!

I had never rode any kind of bike in my entire life. I bought a CR and have never regretted it!!! I had a buddy that greatly discouraged me from buying it as my first bike, but who listens to reason....lol My thought was, it will only go as fast as my right hand will allow it. Granted i've only logged approx. 10,000 or so miles on the two CRs, I wouldn't have changed my decision. Good luck with your decision!

It's not impossible for a noob to transition to a really powerful bike as long as that person has SOME experience riding a motorcycle. However, it is NOT a good idea from a safety standpoint. It's kind of like going from a Cessna 150 with 100 hp to a Beechcraft AT-6 Texan II with 1,200 shp! It can be done since flying is flying, but everything happens so much faster with little transition time.

Will you guys give it up?

This bike, at 30+ mph, is no more dangerous than any other sportbike, less cc's or not!

After a 28 year hiatus, it hasn't killed me yet

Let it go.

Sure. It's no more dangerous *than any other sportbike.* I wouldn't recommend a 600 or 1000cc sportbike to a new rider, either.

In this specific case, the "new rider" is actually a lot more experienced than most of us realized based on the first post or two.

If you have a recent m/c license (less than a year), I'd make sure your (or any) insurance company will even write you a policy for a large CC cycle before you buy one.
