I'm brand new to the Buell forums. I've been riding an S1 White Lightning at New England Dragway for the past 4 years, fell in love with Buell, and finally just bought a 2004 XB12s. The bike has 4,400 miles on it, and is almost completely stock. The only modification is a stock muffler with all (or most) of the baffles removed. This was done by the previous owner. The ECU / fuel map was not changed. The bike runs well, except for one issue. Once it comes up to temperature, the revs are slow to return to idle. When rolling to a stop, the rpms's hang around 2k until I walk them down with the clutch. When the bike is cold, it runs perfect. Anyone have this problem? Is it mostly likely a confused fuel map because of the gutted muffler? Thanks |

Could be a TPS issue, meaning it may need to be reset, unfortunately that's a dealer job unless you have your own software. Sometimes just lowering the idle speed a little will cure it. What is the hot idle speed? if it's over 1000rpm that is enough to cause what is happening, I set mine in the 900rpm range with no problems. |

Replace your intake seals on the cylinders. Also your manifold seals, both sides. American Sport Bike has them. |

My idle speed when its hot is around 1,100 rpm. It will come back down to 1100 when hot, I just have to walk the rpm's back down by starting to let the clutch out at a stop. But I'll try adjusting the idle speed first since its the easiest / cheapest. Also, i'll look into the intake leak problem by spraying them manifold area with propane.. but do you think a 2004 with only 4,400 miles would have bad seals? Thanks for the help guys. |

Mileage doesn't matter...age does. Seals are the #1 problem with old bikes. Replace the seals as mentioned above. It's approximately $30 for them. Can't get much cheaper than that. Adjust idle AFTER you replace seals. |

Absolutely a 2004 with only 4,400 miles would have been allowed to sit for a year or two at a time. Get the seals hot, saturate them with gasoline, and let them dry in the sun or a hot shed for that long and they will fail. Which will mess with your idle every time. |

Thanks guys, I'll replace those seals for sure. I also hear a faint sound coming from somewhere near the motor (almost like a whirring, or 'helicopter'-like sound). It doesn't sound alarming at all, and the bike runs strong. Just wondering if you think this could be related to an intake leak, or if XB's are known for any normal noises (maybe because of the plastic push-rod tubes?). Thanks |

Before you go jumping on the intake seals bandwagon, have you tried lowering the idle your idle? The previous owner could have easily adjusted it to help his sale. I and many others have had this happen after a tps reset due to not letting the engine get to operating temp. |

The fuel pump can make a whirring sound, and depending on the fuel level, the sound can/will be variable in volume. |

@Terrys1980, I'm finally going home to my bike this weekend, I'll start with turning the idle down a couple hundred RPMs. It's almost like a muffled "chatter", speeding up and slowing down with the revs. I didn't notice it when listening to the bike for the first time. But a friend of mine pointed it out, and now I hear it all the time. Are XB's known for any normal motor sounds? |

It might be the pulley nut on the crank being loose. There is a revised torque spec which you can probably find in the Service Bulletin/Recall section in the KV on this forum. |

I turned the idle down to the 950-1000 range and the revs fall back down like they should. Thanks for the help guys. Now on to that little engine chatter... if it's anything at all. |

i can confirm the hanging fast idle fix by simply setting the idle down to 950-975. My 2007 was hanging at 2000 rpm after a highway run and rolling up to a stop. Reset to 950 and fixed. Once again helpful hints from here make all the difference. |
