Hi Jason, welcome to the group. I'm off of 71 up the hill & back behind King's Island. I work in the Mason / Deerfield area so if you ever spot a red Uly XT around the NE side of Cincy it might be me, that is until I get her painted or wrapped ... |

In a simple feeler sort of way, nothing serious yet........ Anyone around here looking for a XB12Scg? 2005 with 20k miles and running perfect. It's the most fun bike I have ever ridden, problem is, I'm considering consolidating to a single machine, and it must be able to tour 2-up, not easily done on this guy. I can provide all the details if there is any interest. It makes me sad posting this... probably just a phase. If I get Uly back and all is well (for awhile please) then this post will be lost in time. Until then, I've got thoughts of new motorcycles running through my head.

Slightly dirtier 2up-able adventure tourer... in order of my current liking: Still pipe dreams, as I'm in Alaska debt for another couple months, but it's fun to dream. (Message edited by Mikef5000 on September 20, 2011) |

I've been bouncing back and forth between the KTM and that triumph as my 'favorite'. It does look fantastic... I'm just worried about that motor. It's smooth and fast, but will it feel boring after riding an XB12 for years? At 94 hp (at the crank), it's plenty powerful for touring solo or two up, but 58 lbft of tq is a far cry from what I'm used too. The KTM bumps the TQ up to 70 and is a V-Twin, so the motor should feel closer to what I'm accustomed to, but it's costlier initially, and with an 18" rear wheel, it's tire selection is much more limited (read expensive). The Yamaha (third one) is the bridge between the two, more powerful (than even the Uly), less expensive than the KTM, and standard D/S tire sizes. But I've read so many reviews saying its typical Jap Bike boring to ride. The BMW is very cool looking, but too dirt oriented to be comfy 2-up, and I've read or serious BMW quality concerns as of lately (highest number of recalls of any motorcycle manufacturer). Triumph again for you: I want a bike that can do it all! Tour 2-up, ride trails solo or swap tires and do a track day, get 60 MPG and 15,000 miles out of a set of tires, and be rock solid reliable. I'm willing to give up one of those to get the rest... but I'm not willing to give up the last one. The Uly is so close (short of the trail riding, but I'll give that up), mine just needs to get the reliability thing going. |

Mike,I picked up a Tenere and find it anything but boring! Plenty of snot, but extremely linear,no hits in the powerband so it's sneaky fast. Road handling is as good if not better than the UlyXT and far better on hardpack and gravel. Reliability should be typical Japanese, valves don't need to be checked until 24K. Tubeless spoke wheels,ABS which works off-pavement(Trust in the lever,Luke),TC,2 throttle maps,Shaft, bolt on subframe, plenty of goodies available with more coming all the time. That said,it is a bit of a porker but hides it's weight well. You would probably be OK with the seat in the low position. A lot of bang for the buck! |

I just learned of an Advrider with an Tenere in Columbus. I may hit him up and beg for a demo ride. I'm on the "call list", as soon as one comes into the closest dealership they'll be giving me a call so I can take a look. |

from what i hear you want a larger front wheel for the off road stuff. man i can't quit looking at that triumph! the triple wouldn't scare me compared to the air cooled buell. i don't recall ever hearing one bad thing about those engines... the yamahama reminds me of the v-strom |

I've heard nothing but fantastic things about the motor as well, but it's down on torque significantly compared to everything I've been riding for the past 5 years. That's what has me worried, not that it's not a great motor, I just don't want to be disappointed in the power... especially when hauling a passenger and camping gear through the rocky mountains. |

Mike: Funny, I've looked carefully at all four of these bikes recently for the same purpose. I have test ridden three (not KTM). They all have pros & cons. I am kinda partial to the Triumph at the moment. The biggest fly in the ointment I see is the need for two-up riding. At least on paper, the KTM (as I recall) has the most power, but, I am not sure any of these bikes are really designed with that in mind. Make sure to test ride them with two people! You may decide something like a Sprint-GT is better for sporty two-up touring than an adventure bike. I got a S-GT this spring, put 5k mi on it with two people, and couldn't be happier (many dozens of miles were done on dirt/gravel and I was rather surprised to stay vertical and feel relatively comfortable). Take off the top-box and side bags and you have a really sporty street bike. My 2 cents. |

The Yamaha is the most powerful by 10 HP and 15 TQ (but also the heaviest). It's also the largest, which I associate to best 2up, as it has a GVWR of over 1000 pounds, which means I can load almost 500 pounds worth of crap on there and still be within their recommended operating range. I know a sport tourer may be better 2up, but I'm in the mood for something dirtier; an adventure tourer will be my next bike (although that may not happen anytime soon in reality.) |

BTW, I went down Tuesday on the way home. I am fine, it was quite minor about 35mph lowside. So now I have a winter project of re-building the bike. So if anyone has donation parts? Nuke blue, any leftovers from your previous firebolt? |

Glad you're okay Neil! hmmm...seems to me that "minor" does not equal "re-building the bike". Maybe it was minor to your body parts (thank goodness) but not the bike parts? Care to enlighten us on what exactly happened? Curious minds want to know! :-) |

I can fill in here just a bit... Neil was heading up Broad through a green light when a car began to enter the intersection from the cross street (with a red light). In a maneuver attempting to avoid a collision Neil hit the front brake, which in turn locked the front wheel (4' skid mark) causing the low side. He and the bike slid 30-40 feet. The bike went down on the left side, and Neil went down on his knee (busted up pretty good it appeared). Clip-on, frame slider, shift lever, rider peg, and passenger peg (and mount) were damaged. I've got a rider peg and shift lever you can have if you want to stick with OEM. I bought them as backups. |

I hope this comes out right: Neil sounds like you need a Basic Rider Course refresher. I don't know you nor you me but I'm a Rider Coach for MO and this is a skill we work on - possibly a little refresher and some practice could have helped avoid the crash... |
