so ive been having oil on the side of my 08R occasionally. not TONS, but more then enough. first time i spotted it i though maybe just a loose bolt or maybe the sensor was leaking a little, so i tightened stuff up and rode it. no leaks for awhile so thought id fixed it. then the other night coming home i spotted oil on the side again. cleaned it up and took it out for a spin to see if i could tell where from. i could get a general idea but couldnt pin point it. and sometimes it just wouldnt leak any oil. figured out that it only did it if i really spun up the motor(which i do frequently during my wheelie blasts...) so i made a few high rpm blasts down the road and had some oil show up again. but obviously going down the rode at speed blows the oil around and i still couldnt pin point it. so against my usual way, i crouched down beside the bike and squided my throttle while keeping a close eye on the area i had narrowed it down to... (the white is baby powder) as far as i can tell it is bubbling out around the bolt that is holding that clamp on. then it would run down the clamp dispersing the oil onto the clutch and electrical lines and scattering everywhere from there. so currently i took the bolt out and moved the clamp down to the bolt below it. then put a little silicon on the bolt that originally held the clamp and re assembled it. ive just been giving it some time to set up and hope to take it for a good run maybe tomorrow. it doesnt seem to be leaking out of the gasket where the side cover meets the case, just where the bolt passes between the 2. ugh. hope this works otherwise i think i may have to pull the side off and put new gaskets in. or just not spin it up to 10k anymore... not likely. |

Got a Gopro? Video might help if you can capture it as it happens. Also gives you an excuse to spin it up past 10k rpm... |

oh i regularly spin it up to 10k. i am pretty sure that i spotted it bubbling from behind that bolt when i was standing beside it with the motor spinning up(man i hate doing that). |

I'm pretty sure one of the clutch cover bolts near that area of the cover requires a copper washer. Check the service manual. I don't have it handy right now. |

hmm, just looked in the parts book and see it lists one for a bolt in that area, but it appears to be the bolt above the clamp that gets that. |

Looks like the copper washer goes two bolts north of the P clamp. |

Tim Clean all the baby powder off it(thought it was snow at first ) Once clean, spray the engine with Tinactin, get a fairly thick white coating. The spray won't fall off like the baby powder. The leak location will jump out in vivid black. Even works with fresh clear oil... Z (Message edited by zac4mac on September 17, 2011) |

I will say the torque specs must be light on this bike.I was checking all of my bolts in the cases and a bunch of them tightend about 1/4 turn with a screw driver. |
