Ok, so in another thread I mentioned that I was happy with the position of my new to me Cee Bailey's windscreen. However, after a couple hundred miles at freeway speeds with strong winds, I have realized that it is not perfect.

I read a bunch of threads of Palmer vs. MadStad. It seems about 50/50, and most that prefer the Palmer preferred it because they were comparing it to the old MadStad which came with a new flyscreen. The current model uses your stock flyscreen and windscreen.

If I buy the MadStad setup, it would cost $151.95s shipped:
http://www.madstad.com/s.nl/it.A/id.368/.f

If I buy the Palmer setup, it would cost $166.06 by the time I add the no-tool adjusters and black powdercoating (both standard on the MadStad), the baffle (which Palmer says is necessary to fully function) and overseas shipping:
http://palmerproducts.co.uk/

So, roughly the same price, roughly the same function. To me the MadStad seems simpler, which I think is good in this instance.

Does anyone have experience with the newer MadStad AND the Palmer brackets?

What say you?

I have actually been asking myself the exact same question. The MadStad seems to be a bit lower profile and I think that I like the black a little better as well although I believe that you can order the Palmers powder coated. Another thing I liked about the MadStad is that if you want there is also a black AL MadStad flyscreen that you can order for more support, $78 @ adventuremotorcycleparts dot com.

I have both the original and new versions for the MadStad. I've had the original version on my '06 since Sept '08.. have about 34K on it with various size wind sheilds (stock, 16" Parabellum etc).. Zero Issues with the bracket quality, performance etc.

I bought the new version without the aluminum fly screen for the '10. Put it on back in Dec, have about 6K on this one. I bought the 20" Smoke Adventure Shield with the brackets. Zero issues with this as well.

(On both bikes, I run the stock shield in summer and a bigger one for winter. )

Product quality is excellent, there are some minor differences/improvements between the two versions. I really like the new setup on the stock flyscreen.. very stable with the 20" screen I ran in the cold weather and looks good.

As with any 'windsheild' setup.... YMMV depending on many variables.

Yes, my price comparisions above include black powdercoating the Palmer brackets- pretty much an apples-to-apples comparison.

So....so far we have 2 guys with no clue, and 1 vote for MadStad from someone that I gather has not used the Palmer!

Thank you for your input gentlemen, any more experiences to be shared?

My Uly came with a MS setup (including screen). It seems to be well made and does what it is supposed to do. I've no experience with Palmer. The MS windsheild blocks more air than I'd like, but I prefer sitting out in the wind.

I don't think you are going to find many people who have used both. I bought the Palmer brackets after riding from Florida to Wisconsin for Homecoming. I use it with the stock XT screen without the baffle. My only complaint is that I didn't do it sooner.

Of course, I understand that different people have different expectations and tolerances of wind. My current set blocks plenty of wind for me and has no buffeting. I am happy.

Sorry I can't make a direct comparison to the MS.

Assuming I'm not one of the clueless... but who knows

Correct.. no Palmer for me....
Shared what I know about what I have.

+1 on Dyna's comment.. doubt very few if any have had both.

Do you have to have the stock ULY bars on for this to work. PO put RENTHALS on and it doesn't have the crossbar on it.

The MadStad doesn't touch the bars in any way. I don't think the palmer does either -- these bolt to the opaque flyscreen/number plate thingy above the headlight.

No worries Michael, Aaron and I are the clueless ones : p

Previous threads had many folks who had used both, but the MS bracket being compared was the old one...sounds like the new one is better.

I truly gather that I can't go wrong either way. I think I'll get the MS- a couple bucks cheaper, I like the looks better, and I'll get it a ton faster.

Well I bought the MS brackets. Very well made and easy to install. They (duh) made a HUGE difference. Stock flyscreen left me with wind against my chest. Cee Bailey's screen fixed that...by moving the wind up to my helmet! It wasn't bad until hitting freeway speeds and the buffeting threw my head around. These brackets move the air up and over my helmet- it truly seems to be a perfect combination.

Simple pic here, let me know if you want more pics or have questions about the brackets.

Andy, who's windscreen are you using and how do you think it compares to the Uly XT "tall" screen? Also, how tall are you?

My XT screen with MadStad brackets has the wind hitting me right at the top of my helmet, and like you say, sometimes highway speeds can be a bit of a head bobble.

I was thinking of trying to velcro a used helmet shield to the top of the XT screen as poor man's laminar lip.

Thanks,
Brent

Yanno, I thought it was a Cee Bailey screen, but I don't see anything like it on their site! I bought it used from another BadWebber, I just messaged him to see if he can help to answer that question.

I'm 6'2". I have not tried the factory tall screen, I went from the short one to this one to this one with the brackets.

I have the palmer bracket with the stock large screen and I like it better than without the bracket but doesn’t solve the buffeting, it just moves it off my neck and up to my helmet where it's more tolerable. It’s good to about 75 or 80 MPH. I have tried all of the setting on the bracket and like the top slot tilted all the way back the best. The big thing is how far back you sit on your seat makes a huge difference. I'm 6'3" with a 35” inseam.

I confirmed with the previous owner (who also bought it used) that it is, to the best of his knowledge, a Cee Bailey screen. I did a little bit of searching of the interwebs, and found a few threads showing the same screen posted by folks calling it a Cee Bailey product. I believe it is a discontinued product ;-/

Andymnelson, that looks real nice. I like that dark shield on the black bike. Your bike looks to be very well cared for also.

I have the Uly tall screen which came stock on the XT along with Palmer brackets that are set at the highest position and tilted to the center slot. I am 6'0, 34" inseam and this combo works a whole lot better than stock but I still get some buffeting on the helmet. I really need a new helmet though as mine is worn and a little loose so it moves around. Not good. I think it would be perfect if the windshield was about an inch taller. Thanks.

From what I can tell (I own it, and it's engraved with their name), THIS is a CeeBailey windshield:

I painted the bottom of mine orange; they ship black. You remove the stock flyscreen (six bolts) and put this windshield in its place. It is one piece.

AFAIK, this is the only way they make a windshield for a Uly...at least now, it is. They may have had another design in the past...but I don't know.

Yes Rat, it appearance that is the only one they make now. Looks like this is a discontinued model, based on the previous owners word and several other threads I read showing this same screen.

I love the screen- anyone have suggestions for a different, similar aftermarket screen?

Ive tried lots of shields on lots of bikes. NONE are perfect.
I tried the MadStad with the large MS shield. Works OK an sure does look good. I can hear the motor noise more and it kinda makes my neck hurt. Also I could never get the thing to stay put and after some frustrating 500 miles or so I got a fixed Calsci tall. It is firm on the bike and almost no buffeting. I feel like I want to shorten it because the air is really clean about two inches taller. Thinking about going with a tall stock seat to stretch out some so I haven't shortened it yet. The Calsci does look little goofy but next to me you wouldn't notice. Thing is there is so many variables with windshields and body types and opinions. Whats great for one guy might not be for another. But I think most of us an agree the MS is good looking equipment.

I have the MadStad set up with there wind screen. Blocks the wind perfectly for me. Great in colder weather. Have had it on for 20K with no problems. Comfortable up to 100 mph. Plus they are on this side of the pond (usa)

I've had madstad system for several years now and have used buell short, tall, cali- sci and ms shields all work well. I really think that using the memphis shades lowers as described elsewhere in badweb are very helpful

If anyone's looking to sell their old MadStad setup, please send me a PM.
I want the replacement aluminum flyscreen from the original MadStad.

Mine was damaged in an "incident" and HD wants silly money for a backordered-direct from manufacturer replacement plastic flyscreen.

Of course, I would buy a stock plastic one from someone if they had that, as well.

I think the hole , bracket pattern might be different. So you want the Alum Mad Cowl to use with a stock shield without the Mad. brackets? Is that correct?
