My warranty is about to expire on my 2009 XB12XT. HD just sent me a notice saying I can buy their extended service plan. I have no idea what the cost is yet. I have about 18,000 miles on the bike now and it runs like new. Should I go for it? What's your experiences with extended plans? |

Short of a major failure like engine or transmission, they are a waste of cash. It will run you about $1800 to get 5 more years out of it, then you still pay $50 deductible to get work done, and you are not covered as well as the factory warranty. Oh and the worst part? If you happen to wreck your bike before the warranty even kicks in, you only get a partial refund. |

Here's the deal: what you are buying is peace of mind. Peace of mind knowing that if your bike breaks, you can pay a $50 deductible to have a shop work on your bike that does not want to, and have to order parts that are not readily available and have your bike be down for weeks instead of a couple of days if you did it yourself. Even in the most catastrophic failure scenarios we have seen such as the crank failures, you can repair the bike for less than $1800. |

Buy shop manual and a tool box. And a whole lot of beer. Make friends with a guy whose bike always works and looks nice. In other words, follow the classic path to effortless bike ownership. |

No BUT I have a riding partner who bought an 04 wideglide new and chumped for the extended warranty. His engine took a shit at about 40k and his new one cost him $50 total. He has a total of 92,000 miles on it currently and every time he get's off the bike he smiles. I still say no. |
