I'm doing one of the last updates needed for my bike, the primary chain tension shoe, and thought you might be interested to see what an original shoe looks like with 56,000 miles. If you'll notice the excessively deep grooves. I'm curious as to whether this would be the cause of the engine not riding smoothly above 3k RPM. So the question would be whether this has caused premature wear to the chain. It doesn't appear to be problematic, but I'm not an expert. Interestingly enough I just replaced the tension shoe on my Tour Glide with 79,000 miles and it did not look anything like this. -Br-

IMHO, this means to me that the primary chain has or is being adjusted "TOO TIGHT" !!! PRIMARY CHAIN Class 101, just PM me if you want a copy ... |

I see nothing unusual about that shoe. You're going to upgrade to the new more reinforced one anyways, right? The shoe wears down quickly until the rollers in the chain contact the surface, I think. When readjusting the chain afterwards, remember that the aluminum case expands more than the steel chain does so I always adjust mine on the sloppy side with a cool engine. |

Just finished putting in the updated version. I would, at first, think that the chain is too tight, but I'm pretty meticulous about verifying the slack between 3/8 and 1/2 (cold engine of course). Tech friend of mine said he has seen them wear deeper than that with normal adjustment. Little late for taking it for a spin, but I may do that tomorrow afternoon. I'm pretty excited. -Br- |

The PRIMARY CHAIN should be adjusted to 3/4 of an inch slack on the chain TIGHT SPOT "cold" !!! It has already been stated that the engine expands latterly the hotter it gets and any thing less than 3/4 of an inch is TOO TIGHT !!! The FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL is "WRONG" as 3/8 to 1/2 inch is just "TOO TIGHT" !!! |
