I'm trying to eliminate/confirm the cluster as the cause of a dead bike. Might be the battery but...

Here's the story. This morning, immediately after lighting off the motor, I accidentally hit the kill switch as I reached for the throttle. Un-killed, hit the starter and dead dead dead. One would think a weak battery might do this, after getting the starting draw like that and no time on the charging system.

Got home and tried the tender for a bit. no cluster, no fuel pump.

Tried to jump via my truck. same result.

Used the battery from my '86 interceptor and same result.

Fuses good.
Relays click when I turn the ignition switch on/manipulate the kill switch. Moved them around just in case. Nada.
Pulled the ignition switch and did continuity tests. Checks out good.

Put the oem ECM back in. Nothing.

Brake light comes on when I key on. For a while the rear signals would flicker when I had the ignition on, but stopped doing that after a while.

It did, for an instant run the cluster/fuel pump after a bit on the tender but then went back to its previous behavior.

Any ideas?

I would suspect the battery.

Or, your VR might be grounded. And I don't mean the casing.

You've not had any issues before this?

Thanks Froggy.

2S -a couple of weeks back I was getting a battery light and it hiccuped on the highway. Traced it down to a loose positive connection on the battery. Been fine since.

any ideas on how to test the vr? continuity between leads?

The bike runs fine without a cluster with a couple of things in mind:

1. Obviously, there's no way to look at codes or a CEL thrown.

2. When I busted a cluster, I found running the bike without one would cause the fuel pump to cycle indefinitely... or at least 30+ minutes. I'd plug in a cluster, cycle power, and the fuel pump would shut off in the usual 5 minutes or so.

I did a whole track day without one, though, and nary another noticed issue.

You'd have to test the voltage regulator when it's running.

I'm not sure of the output you should see, but IIRC, it's about 14.2VDC.

Also, regarding the VR, with it's location it tends to cook itself as the airflow under the seat isn't ideal for a VR. With a 2008 1125r, I'm not sure that there would be any stator/VR issues, but the mounting point alone isn't the best location.

Both of my X1 Lightnings have the VR mounted right below the oil filter and right behind the front tire. I've never heard of any issues with those VR's.

Smoke,
I did what you did and discovered i had pulled the kill switch wires at the back of the switch when i moved my hand that accidently hit the kill switch.

it is a fine wire terminating in a plug that slips onto a spade connector. it had loosened but was not hanging loose

check that out - hope it's an easy fix for you

Only spade connectors IVO of the starter controls are for the brake light switch.
