i bought a klx 400r,its a dirt only model that was converted for street use and i regestered it. it is the best thing besides my xb12r ..and wife that i have ridden. i have a set of supermoto street tires but have not seen any s/m races in my area..that sucks, but i had a 660 raptor and banchee forever and got sick of being trhown out of the woods and threatened fined etc..(ma. sucks) but with this bike i can ride good enough to hang with almoast any dirt bike and hit the streets and ride home,it great. the only downside is that its not so good on the highway and 2 up riding is tough..but for a dirtbike its great,it may not be the best at anything but it does it all. too bad buell was not around long enough too catch on to this and build one..id buy it!

I had a local fella that wanted to trade my Buell XB12R for a xr650r Sumo. I almost did it.

get the blast... and give it a Sumo face lift ; best of both worlds

of course to really do it right, that Grand National Flat track frame would be required.

There was a fella at homecoming that had a blast motor.......or something on a dirt bike (maybe part Buell) chassis. He even rode the bike there (2 years in a row if I remember correctly). I can't remember who it was, or exactly what was done to the bike, but it was AWESOME!!! I wanna get a hold of him, get a few pics, and ask some questions. Anyone know who this is? I'll post it in QB too.

Gettin' back to this, been busy...The bike is a 2003 Suzuki DRZ-400..the motor is stock except for the pipe and intake.

When I started on it, I had a few goals. I wanted nice wide sticky tubeless tires. It had to be much lower for my stubby ass to ride it. And it had to handle and stop well.

I just stripped the bike down and went at it. The wheels are Suzuki. The front is from a GS-500 and is 3.0 x 17 fitted with 110/70/17 Pilot Power, The rear is from a somewhat rare 400 Bandit It is 4.25 x 17 with a 160/60/17 Pilot Power...it too some time at the bench lathe and press along with some bearings to fit them...if you are a hobbiest, easy to figure out. The rear wheel ends up offset a bit,but is absolutely invisible. The hardest part is the rear brake hanger and brake...You need a RM250 hanger that gets bushed, ground and fitted...the GS rear disc gets cut down in a lathe..There is some machine work on the rear wheel damper/sprocket carrier, but honestly that can be done with a side arm grinder and some patience along with close observation and measurement. The front brake requires a caliper bracket, but that is available from several sources..or do like I did and build your own.

I built a subframe because the original was bent some and not symmetrical..that is being redone soon because I am planning on fitting a more comfortable seat. (my Sunday rides are usually 300-400 miles and that dirtbike seat dissapears up my butt after 50 miles...I have been looking at different tanks and may change that too.

The bars are a set of clip ons I got from E-bay...The front tubes are lid up 1.5" and the rear has a 2" lowering link. I cut several inches out of the kick stand...The gearing is stock ratio...I bought and tried bigger front sprockets to help with top speed...geared high, the motor runs out of power before you run out of rpm. It ran 98mph according to my GPS while geared high and will run 96mph with the stock gear, but rev higher. The stock gear give acelleration nearly on par with my XB up to 50 or so mph it definately pulls hard.

The motor is sort of interesting...it is 396cc DOHC 4 valve single...it was designed by Yoshimira in a Co-design between Suzuki and Kawasaki..It is as reliable as a rock, is not ill tempered and does not require expensive frequent maintenance...There is someone on a Thumper board that claims to have 80K street miles on one....they do share something with my Buell...the engine is mechanically noisy...the clutch chatters at idle and it sings when you rev it up.

With the jet kit in the stock Keihn CV carb, it starts first stab everytime hot or cold...tickle the starter button is is running before you can release it...If you have anything that needs jets...call J.D. Jetting think they are in Utah...those folks are friggin' awesome...my jet kit came with hand written recommendations for my altitude...personal touch.

I am hoping to get it looking more "cafe" and less Tard...Although much fewer and more far between down here there are some nice tigh twisties...It shines there...it flicks instantly holds a very nice line, I haven't got it to headshke on me yet and I have taken it beyond safe and sane.

It doesn't have that locomotive drive out of a corner like the xb....but if you keeps the transmission stirring, you can get a crossed up heeled over wheelie thing going on comeing out of an apex in second gear.

The exhaust is just the stock header cut and resectioned witha coule of brackets and the can is made from 3" tubing with perf core and stainless wool packing. But it is LOUD!!!...the footpegs are too low, need to build higher rearsets...I wore completely thru the outer edges of my boot soles riding it...the Powers hook really well...tho it is hard to get them up to temp.

It gets around 60mpg if I short shift it and ride it easy....It will happily cruise all day at 70mph...It is a complete hoot to ride in the twisties and the front brake is good enough for two finger stoppies.

Sorry for the por spellin'..I'm a bit medicated at the moment..but no worries, I'm fine : )

Thank you. That thing is COOL lookin. Looks like a barrel of monkeys. Mucho fun! I'm a machinist also, so I know what you mean when you say "build your own". I threw a lot of parts at my scoot this last winter. Keep up the good work. I don't think anyone would complain if ya threw a few more photos of it on here.

Was it white?
If so, I got behind it leaving Erik Buell Racing at last years Homecoming, awesome little bike - I love it

Hybridmomentspass: Yeah, I got a hold of him (Loose1). It has half of an XB9 fuel injection on it also. Some serious amounts of work put into that project. Certainly one of the best I've seen. Hopefully he has it at H.C. again this year. That way I can stare at it for 15 minutes or so.

I think he has an xb swingarm and wheels on it too..I though about modding my old blast like that with the intention of making a lightweight corner burner...but I found the frame flexes and abandoned the idea and bought an XB.

The wheels on the 'tard were pretty easy. I have since found that there are some CBR wheels that are wider that can be made to fit...I plan to change the carb at some point to a Kehin flat slide and change the cams...(stock parts for the offroad only "e" model). I had thought of dual disc front using some gsxr parts and a modified Left side fork leg...but there is no need, it has great brakes...in fact, I plan on shortening the rear brake arm when I build the rearsets..it has too much brake...
