ok guys so here it goes i bought the bike about a month ago. about 2 weeks after i bought it i was riding and it stopped. so i brought it to a buell service place where they took a look at it say i seized my cam bushings. and did some other damage( crankcase flywheel)... so they say that its going to be around 3500$ to fix it.. witch is way to much for me. the bike has 26k on it. so i took it home. they didnt put any screws in my top fairing so that flew off on a road some where... im pretty pissed about that.. i went back and couldnt find it. but in any case heres what i need help with. i need to find the parts to fix it. all the parts are for an 04 firebolt xb12r what i need are crankcase flywheel assembly all 4 cams and cam bearings piston rings pinion bearings so i need to re build the lower end basicly... so if any one has and engine they would like to get rid of... or a wrecked bike... and what year engines were the same for the firebolt. so if i find say parts for an 05 or a whole engine i can do a swap. any help tips i mean anything would be helpful right about now. thanks corey |

Ouch! If you are going to do the engine swap route, get once as close to your year as possible, while a 2010 engine will fit in the frame, they made changes to the motor and electrics over the years and the newer the motor the more you will have to replace or work around to make it work. |

04-05 engines from the firebolts and lightnings are the same and a 06 is also a possible option i think ,only these have a bigger shifting shaft.(but that can be changed) maybe you can call these guy's for parts or a complete motor http://www.buellsterparts.com/product.sc?productId =5&categoryId=9 |

Double check the prices on things before you buy from Buellster, they love to sell parts taken off wrecked bikes at higher than brand new retail prices. They also love to sell used one time use parts too. |

Yea there is slim pickings right now, usually there are a few on ebay, but perhaps due to there are not as many bikes getting totaled these days. |

A quick search on ebay shows 2 2008 XB12 engines, 1 is $1750, the other is $1299. A few Blast and XB9 engines are listed as well. |

On your dead motor, check things like the primary cover to see if the clutch lips are still good, primary drive gears and chain. clutch pack, gears out of the transmission, etc could probably be sold to offset the costs of the replacement motor. But don't sell them until you have the other motor running and tested! |

Problem is the 08 motor will require a new wiring harness, ECM, and throttle cables at a minimum. At least with an 07 motor it has the same fuel injection system, so it would be more plug and play. |

It's an example of the approximate replacement cost for a used engine. Gives him a data point to work from...that is all. |

Yep the 06 will work, I believe the connections for the oil lines is different, so you may need to replace them, but other than that it should drop right in. The 06 also has the newer smoother transmission, and a better oiling system. Chinspoiler and air filter is the same on all years and models XB. |

03-07 all use the same pump, but they did revise somewhere along the line. My 06 had an issue with the pump wires (common issue on 06), dealer replaced the pump back in 2009 and the new pump is damn near silent. Loud is normal on the older pumps. |

Might be worth getting a new pump just to reduce noise. |

so if the oil lines are different i should grab the oil lines off the 06 right? |

The 06 and up received the high performance oil pump drive gear from the factory. It doesn't wear out like the early drive gear. |

if you use your swingarm/oil lines with a 06 engine ,the only thing you have to do is turn the elbow that goes into the cam cover from pointing up to pointing down.

The reason for the new oil lines in '06 is because they changed the swingarm. The engine should be the same, so your old oil lines should bolt right up. |

ok new engines in... just went to go for the first ride and the belt snapped. got about 50' in my yard. oh and it looks like i cross threaded the 90 that goes in to the top of the oil pump.(i feel like an idiot) whats the best way to go about swapping that out? i have one off the old motor but i had to take the oil pump off to get it off... is that the only way? |
