Can removing the battery cables cause a cold blooded running at first start ? Bike runs fine when warmed up. Just wondering if the computer had to relearn ? Bear with me, this is my first non carbed bike & I had to fix a stripped out cable bolt. Just bought this 07 XB12SS with 347 miles on it & battery was dead when I got it home. First ride, bike is extremely cold blooded, is this normal ? | ||

Yea the ECM just needs to do some learning. A few steady 20-30 minute cruises with rpm between 2.5-3k and throttle position between 30-40% should level it off and give her time to learn the sensors. | ||

Disconnecting the battery doesn't alter the contents of your ECU. That said, what Terry said is still correct. With only 347 miles on it and has been sitting so long that the battery went flat, you're dealing with old gas mostly. It will come around once it's broken in. My 2008 consumed oil until it was broken in so keep an eye on that too. | ||

The battery went flat from sitting and the fact that the cables were loose. The posative was loose because the PO had stripped the cable holdown bolt & nut. Could be the gas, I added a gallon of fresh with some FI cleaner in it. Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated. Got my RSS today so Ill install it & go for a long ride tomorrow | ||

I had to buy gas from a Circle K once on my way home from work and even though it was "premium gas" the bike ran like crap. It would backfire and hesitate badly. So I drained it and put in some nice ethanol free stuff from my fav gas station and she was back to normal. | ||

Treat "bad gas" stories as myth. It is so rare. Go back to the battery connections, make sure they are clean, greased and a good fit, especially when they've been stripped before. These bikes don't like less than 10 mile runs. They're not really commuters. Battery doesn't get a full charge and the ECM barely gets the sleep out of its eyes before you shut down. | ||

No, Im saying the tank was filled a month ago {per owner}, I topped it off {1 gallon}and added some fuel injection cleaner to it. Maybe Ill try syphoning it all out and starting with what I know is fresh gas. You can smell 4 year old gas and it wasnt. Its worth a try anyway | ||

Still the same after a 40 mile ride, Ill dump the gas tomorrow and put fresh in & if that dont do it Ill leave it. I cant believe any new bike will run like crap for that long. My carbed fatboy runs better cold then this does. Battery cables are greased & tight, I changed the bolt & nut on the + side that was stripped out | ||

My 06 XB12Ss is often cantankerous on a cold start, especial if it was a warm afternoon when it was shut down then cold the next morning. The ECM hasn't learned that the weather is different yet, and wont figure that out until the bike warms up. The other day it was a really warm morning though and it ran great all through the warm up. I've just learned to expect a couple of coughs from it for the first few minutes. | ||

Actually, you haven't given any details of what the bike is doing. fwiw, there is a drain plug on the side of the tank. If you rode 40 minutes, you probably used a third of a tank so topping it up will work just as well. Between that and your last fill you've replaced all the gas. Sniff test for old gas?? Cheap stone at least. Fouled plugs are worse at cold and/or low revs so that could still apply to whatever it is you're talking about. | ||

I syphoned all I could get out & put 4 gallons of fresh gas in, I ddnt know about the drain on the tank. It seems to run better cold now. Not what Id like but better, and I only took a short ride. Today I'll take it for a long one. What mileage to you guys consider as broken in ? | ||

Just as a follow up I fixed the problem. I did the breather mod and changed to NGK Iridium plugs at the same time so I dont know which did it but I dont care. I also installed the RS scoop but theres still a lot of heat on my right thigh. Might have to look into one of those thermal shields to put by the rear master cylinder. Funny how you have to pay the Harley tax whether its on my Fatboy or Buell to make them like they should be from the factory |
