Hello, I do really need your support. My 2002 X1 white won't even start anymore. I'm really upset with this, and I really don't know what to check next. I truly need some badweb wisdom. Even if I'm good in spoken english I lack in the technical one, so i uploaded a short video which may be better than my description. Shortly said, the bike doesn't want to start: it seems to wake for a couple of seconds, but than it goes dead, giving some gas at the trottle ore going WFO doesn't make any difference. The bike has a proseries ECM, a wyleco and a classic K&N. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUR9zLUdrtw at the end of the video the battery seems to be short of power, but that's because I checked the entire afternoon. That's what I checked: rack sensor ------------> it seems to work. fuses: -----------------> all are in order gray boxes next to fuses -> checked with one spare i have. Are they diodes? spark plugs ------------> couple new. new gas ---------------> someone told me I could had a bad tank refill with some water mixed to the gas; I think this is a little weird, but I checked. the hiss you hear when ou push the engine button seems to be normal; And the red v-twin light isn't turned on. I read that it could be the fuel pump, but i'm uncertain about this, and I don't know how to check. Any other advice is truly appreciated! I have read somewhere that ther's a procedure to check the errors reading how many flashes the light on the dash makes, or something like this. Is it true? |

I would say it's a fuel pump issue. And yes there is a procedure for reading the codes by counting the flashes. Do a search. It has been posted here multiple times. Keep us posted. |

Fernando: Yes, those little gray fuse looking things in the fuse box are diodes. Here is the procedure for checking your codes. Find the diagnostic plug, it's either below the triple tree tucked in, or, under the seat. It's a four male pin connector with a rubber plug in it. Rotate the connector so that the connector lock is at the 12 o'clock position. Then jumper the two right pins together. Make sure your jumper stays connected as they sometimes slip off. Now go and turn the ignition switch to ON, Turn the kill switch on the right handlebar to RUN. You will see your check engine light in your dash light up, then pause, then flash the number of times for your first number, then flash the number of times for your second number. Then, it will pause and either give you more codes or it will return to giving you the same code. Tell us the codes you wrote down and we will be able to help from there. Best wishes. thank you for the support! funny thing is, this all happens just few days before our Italian Buell Week end; and I really wanted to go there with my X1 with alll the new mods. But the bike started bitching. I'll go anyway with the CR, but this is really pissing me off. I'll try everything during the next days. Any other advice is welcome. Ps: yes I live in a beautiful country and probably in the most wonderful city in the world, but... probably not the best place to live inna. I've never had to check fuel pressure on anything I own that is fuel injected, but I had to sort it out on an ill behaved VW Van with an electric fuel pump once. The problem was an intermittent fuel pressure problem, but it took us a LOT of work to figure that out. Didn't finally pin it down until the buddy with the van was driving, and I was leaning over the engine compartment holding a fuel pressure gauge watching what it was doing at the moment the motor was stuttering. I'm guessing you can buy a fuel pressure gauge that goes high enough for fuel injection, and I would also guess the X1 has a tie in point to test it. It think my 95 Saturn SC2 had a schrader valve tie in point come to think of it... |

Fuel pump or fuel pump regulator. See if it will run while shooting starting fluid into the air intake. If it does then it is a fuel problem. I had a fuel pump problem on the '99 X1 I bought last year. To trouble shoot I pulled the fuel tank and hooked up the fuel tank from my S3T to the X1. She started right up. I was lucky having another FI Buell tuber sitting in the garage. |

Perhaps your fuel filter is full of dirt and leaves? It's pretty easy to replace that. You can use normal wormgear hose clamps instead of those fancy factory use once and then cut it off style. A matching fuel filter can be found in most auto parts places. |

I don't blame you Palmer. My experience is that every time I'm wrestling with some badly behaved carb that is leaking, dripping, and jetted wrong every time a cloud passes between it and the sun, I curse the carbs and wish for fuel injection. Then I'm on something fuel injected, and it won't run for some mysterious reason, and I'm cursing the fuel injection and wishing for the old days of carbs. Now I just prefer stuff that isn't broken. |

And if you need an attitude adjustment, fly over to the states and spend a day tuning my sons 1990 Kawasaki KX-60 (two stroke motocross 60cc). That'll cure *anyone* of a desire for a carb. That bikes jetting is the fussiest primadonna I have ever had to suffer through. But when it's right (maybe twice a year if you are lucky), its so amazingly good you get suckered into sticking with it for the other 363 days... :/ |

i am becoming a big fan of the DDFI in my 99 x1. i have run datalog with megalog viewer. its actually a pretty neat ecm. i havnt been a carb guy for years. in 96 i converted a fireblade to run programable efi. there was an article in the august 96 issue of superbike magazine. Have you been into the ecm with ecmspy? there are a lot of tests you can run, fuel pump, coils, tach, etc for troubleshooting. well worth the $$ |
