so I decided to do my first oil change on my buell, however my oil filter will not come off. Turning it to the left (towards the front) even with a wrech it will not come off. Using a belt and running it through the forks i'm literally dragging the bike forward. Even if someone holds the bike, it will not break loose. I started the bike and let it warm up before I started, should I drain the oil first? Then remove the filter?? Any tips or help would be appreciated  | ||

Drain the oil. Can you put a cheater/breaker bar on your wrench for more leverage? Otherwise, it's going to get messy...hammer and punch/screwdriver/chisel...pierce filter and rotate. Make sure to oil the new new filter seal before install. | ||

R850r nailed it. I had to do that on a car once. I destroyed the filter and had to use a chisel on what was left of filter near the base.. tap it in the direction to loosen it. Kinda like a butter knife on a peanut butter jars lid.  Good luck and be patient. And like R850r said oil the filters o-ring before installing or you will have the same problem next time. Lil dab will do ya. | ||

Yea it could get bad. I usually use a BIG channel lock when they don't come off the conventional way (that I bought years ago) when a filter is to tight. I use it all the time for other problems and never regretted it. But have had to revert to the drive a screw driver thru it to twist it off (drive it thru the base area also). Never had to do the chisel and hammer yet. Be sure the seal comes off with the filter as I had one stick with the base and put a new one back on and as soon as I fired it up it blew all the oil out between the 2 seals. Yes it was a mess. thought I'd give you guys an update, I did the screw driver and hammer job. Looks like someone shot my oil filter with a shotgun but it's off, everything else went smooth. Thanks for the help. |
