I just ordered a race kit for my '03 XB9S and was told that it was on back order indefinitely?!? This was at Williams HD in Jersey. I asked if they could even guess at how long it might be and was told "no". I'm just wondering what "indefinitely" really means. Can any of you factory guys help me out here? Steve |

Jersey; what about getting the ECM, and Air filter as components? that might narrow it down to which part is un-available. ....dean |

Yes it is available, well in a manner of speaking the kit is backordered. They may have been confused, the part number has been superceeded to 82003-02YB |

Spiderman - I'm a bit confused myself at this point. Is the kit available or not and do I need to return to the dealer to question them about the new number? The parts person mumbled something about a change in part number while she entered the order. I wanted to be loyal to the local dealer so I bought it from them even though it cost more. I'm wondering now if I should get my money back and order it online. Steve |

Kasse & Glitch - I was planning to send the stock muffler to Brian after I installed the race kit. I know its gonna cost me more, but if I had a warrantee issue, I'd take off the Drummer and throw the race can back on. Plus I wanted to do my own comparison. Steve |

When I bought My 9 a few months back, they tried telling me the same thing. I ended up telling them, No race Kit, No sale. They had one in, and installed in 48 hours. just get on the phone and start calling dealers. The race ECM has been changed, don't know if the new ECMs are even out yet. knock on wood, no dead spots on mine. |

Jersey, It is available, it is just backordered. Basically if you order it, it will take any where from 5 days to 2 weeks. |

Everyone, thanks for your replies. I guess I'll wait it out for a couple of weeks. Maybe the new ECM has a better map - we'll see. It's been cold and rainy here in Jersey anyway. I've only been riding lunchtimes on dry days in the 40s or above. I'm still gonna send the stock can to Brian as soon as the race kit shows up. Steve |

Hey, that's such a great idea, keeping a race kit around so that you can throw it on if you get any warranty issues. Douse that mean you can swap the race for a Drummer without the hassel of resetting the ECM and nobody will know? |

Oh, I forgot to say that that's presuming that you have fitted a K&N filter, race ECM and previously had that ECM set up for the race pipe. (Just to clarify the question - Douse that mean you can swap the race pipe for a Drummer without the hassel of having to reset the ECM? And will the miserable so and so at my dealership who threatened to devalidate my warranty if I fitted any other pipe to my 12R other than the Buell race one, do you think I'll be able to get away with having him fit the race kit and afterwards swap the pipe for a Drummer and then swap it back IF there are any problems that should be delt with as a warranty claim. will he be able to know, and devalidate my warrenty? |

Grufflie, That's a difficult and loaded question to answer....except...just fit the Drummer and f%*k the warranty, it's easy, I did, and I may be a fool, but I really don't give a rat's ass...time will tell...and I'm enjoying the bike NOW rather than waiting around for some f*&kin' warranty. |

Grufflie - I'm a fairly decent wrench, so I'll be doing all the work myself, except for the TPS reset of course. If the warrantee issue comes up, I'll just swap cans. Brian (Drummer) is the guy to ask about if just swapping the cans means a TPS reset, but as I understand it its the ECM change that forces the TPS reset(I could be wrong). Daves - Is the part number on your two 82003-02YB? The "B" must mean a difference from the original. I'm still trying to figure out what that difference might be and if it even matters. I'm suspecting it has something to do with the race ECM. Steve |

If I'm not mistaken the first exhaust can could rust, and they came out with a different coating. Mine has the one that can (is) rust. Mike has the newer one, nice jet coat look, nice and shiney, mine has a more mat look to it (and a little orange tint from thew rust that's showing up). So "B" may mean the coating difference between new and old. |

Actually the way a partnumber works is this I am going to use a standard Buell/H-D number not to confuse you with the Buell Letter number system. a part number has five numbers a hyphen (-) then two more numbers. The first five are basically a number the last two after the hyphen are the year the part was introduced. a Y at the end of the number idicates a Buell Only Part. IE... 58785-02Y Introduced in 2002 an only for use on Buell Models NOW... If the part number has a A or B on the very end it means the part has been updated. SO if said Part number above was upgrade it would read 58785-02YA and if it was upgraded yet again it would be 58785-02YB And so on. I am not sure what happens when It gets past Z but I have seen some old H-D part Numbers with H at the end LOL. NOW some smaller parts Like nuts bolts an O rings have smaller two to 5 digit part numbers. But most Have the standard five hhyphen two Then Buell has the letter number system in some parts IE M0310.YBA I have yet to crack this code sorry. |

I have 2 in stock also.... yes you could just swap out the pipes without worring about tps reset....as long as the battery voltage is not disrupted to the ecm no need to do the tps....but ride the bike for a while to get the AFV adjusted to the pipe |

Brian, You mean the TPS gets reset every time the battery is disconnected? I thought all the setting in the ECM is stored in an EPROM (erasable/programmable ROM). The manual says nothing about resetting the TPS after unplugging the battery. |

I would suggest that the ECM has both PROM/EPROM and EEPROM memory within. Let me explain. An EEPROM (Electronic Erasable Progamable Read Only Memory) holds is program/memory until directed to due so... this is like the BIOS chip on your PC... You "flash" it to reprogram it. Otherwise it will retain what's programmed in regardless of whether or not power is applied; where as an EPROM/PROM (Erasable / Programmable Read Only Memory) clears itself when power is removed...... The ECM likely has both kinds of memory within it circuits.... kk//kef edited by freyke on November 28, 2003 edited by freyke on November 28, 2003 |

It is my fairly certain understanding that the ECM does not need a TPS reset after loss of supply voltage. |

My XB9R has been without a battery connected for approx 12 months. Started right up with absolutely no problems at all after fitting a new battery. |

Blake is correct..you can yank the battery out & it wont affect the tps 1 bit. Also once you have the tps set for the race ecm you can swap back & forth between the stock & the race one without resetting the tps. This is per the article Buell published in an issue of fuell. Once the tps is set for a particular ecm it retains that setting for that unit. makes me think the tps reset is actually contained within the ecm. |

all I know is what I was told at buell school. but you may be right. I am not the most computer literate person out there. of course I may have heard it wrong also. plus I put no faith in computers because they are machines that are programmed by humans ...garbage in garbage out. wait maybe its humans I have no faith in... oh well I could be wrong on this. I cjecked the manual and it said nothing about it. so there ya go... |
