Lets not tear it down quite yet. Just looking at the age of the bike and that the line comes out of the upper trans inner cover and goes up and then back down so that it vents, yet the WASH drains back to the primary, what if the hose has a crack right about where it hooks up to the inner fitting. It would maybe leak at higher rpms or leaks all the time and only shows it during normal riding. Please check that first or replace the line then see if it is better. Of course it could still be the seal though. Good luck and keep us informed. |

+1 on the crank seal. When that seal is good, I don't think that vent does much beyond equalize pressure as the bike warms up and cools down. |

Is there engine oil in the primary case? Did more than a quart of anything drain out? My '99 had a bad habit of sucking rainwater into the transmission oil through that hose until I replaced it with a longer one that goes up higher. The water/oil would mix into a yellow foam which would belch out onto my fender and wheel. If the excess fluid is engine oil, your crank seal is shot. |

Hey everyone - I've got the same bike and the same problem - is that seal fairly easy to replace once I pull the engine sprocket and clutch assembly ? Also , do you think the seal is the only thing wrong ; or do I have some other issue such as bad rings causing excessive crankcase pressure or a weak oil return ? |

You've got engine oil in your primary case? Are you sure? The vent tube needn't terminate above the wheel. I ran mine up to where the oil lines go into the top of the oil tank and capped it with some copper gauze and a hose clamp. Never leaks anymore, the extra elevation and dry location did the trick. |

The 2000 and above Cyclones have the vent tube running up along the top frame rail to back by the tail light (at least that's where mine is..). The seal isn't hard to replace, there is a tool available to make sure it's inserted to the correct depth. If you go too deep it rubs against the crank bearing race and rapidly wears out. These seals are notorious for failing, that's why the new seal is a double lip version instead of the old single lip. Brad |
