Getting ready to do 15,000 mile service on 06 Uly Want to replace air filter & everything being equal would just as soon not pay HD prices (especially since local dealers give me hard time on Buell orders) Anybody have P/C # for an after market air filter? | ||

99savage, Save yourself some money and wash the original oem filter. I've got 33,000+ on my original air filter. Wash it once per season and it works fine. First remove and tap out as much as you can. Then wash it. To wash all you have to do is gently soak the outside of the filter with very soapy water. Next run warm tap water through filter from the inside towards the outside. Rinse this way until all soap is gone and water is clear. Hang in shower until mostly dry and reinstall and ride. Remember that everytime you ride in the rain these filters get damp. These filters are tough and will last a long time so no need to throw it out after only 15,000 miles of riding. Don't try to dry with compressed air because that'll blow a hole in any type of air cleaner media. I am not the only one here who washes the original air cleaner but maybe the first. | ||

I bought a stock one so that I can swap them out quickly. Then I stick the dirty one in the dishwasher. I remove it before the dry cycle. So far, this is working nicely. | ||

Panhead, Sounds like something I'd do and then, of course, forget. My dishwasher has a heater coil and it gets hotter than hell in there. I guess it would be sterilized once done. | ||

I have a K&N and i'm really happy with it, never had any issue and have washed it 3 times, each one has a different opinion, so it all depends on what do you expect from and air filter, i'd never change my K&N also washing it is dead easy, and i suppose the oil must catch some more muck in the air, so if you live and a dusty area i'd go for the K&N, if not save that money for other stuff. | ||

Thanks Solid advice here - Will probably go the K&N route Did a lot of gravel riding the past month & think it is worth replacing the filter. Local, independent parts guy can get the K&N @ $15 less than internet price | ||

99, Don't throw out that paper filter. Wash it and keep it as a spare so that you can reuse it some day. Probably the day you notice that you can see through your K&N when you hold it up towards the sun and can see places that don't seem to be filtered. I've got one on my Harley and swear that there are unfiltered spots here and there. That's probably why K&N breather easier. | ||

I ride gravel and dirt often, and I just wouldn't feel good about using a K&N or similar gauze filter. I know for a fact that they let larger and more particles into the airstream than paper elements. Now, my general unscientific gut feeling from spending time on this board and riding with some local Buellers leads me to believe that these engines are not in it for the long haul anyway, so whether or not the additional debris has a significant cumulative effect on XB engine life or not is surely debatable. The engine may destroy itself long before the extra silicates would. Not sure how I feel about washing paper filters either, though. I'd probably just give Harley the money if I really was hoping to make the bike last. | ||

I vote for the K&N too. I have had one on my X1 for 80,000 miles with no issues. If you do go the K&N route, check the inside of the mesh very carefully the first time specifically at the seam where the screen is cut in the manufacturing process. Someone on here found a bunch of tiny chunks of screen in there. They are STEEL and were found on the inside of the filter. I checked my new XB filter before installing it and found one little screen chunk. It probably wouldn't shake itself loose but I didn't take the chance and removed it with tweezers. |
