I don't understand how you can be fed up with belt drive? I love mine! Clean, quiet, maintenance free and no drivetrain lash!

Because IMO its unreliable! That was the third belt snapped. Do I run the the crap out of the bike? YES, but I should be able to! Im not abusing it I Pulled in the clutch shifted from first at about 9k rpm to 2nd and touched the throttle with no response!!!! Im very fed up with that system. Belts have benefits but reliability isn't one of them!!!!!!

Get your swingarm checked out, it may be twisted causing undue stress on the belt. Both my 1125s are over 16k without any belt issues, Jdugger takes his on the track regularly without issue either. The vast majority of us will have fantastic reliability.

Something is fishy Froggy! I love alot of things about the belt but this snapping is killing me! What would cause my swingarm to be twisted? I have the belt theres no stripped teeth its a perfect cut in between to teeth!

Mine's got over 25k on the clock so far and it's been abused a little. No signs of it going south just yet though.

Ive ridden over 36k between my 2 Buells and never had a belt issue. I do have a theory that hard down shifts stress the belt.

Save your nickels for a chain-drive kit, Erik Buell Racing sells them.

I'm completely sold on belts and cast wheels with no intention on going back to "old tech".

I have over 10k miles on a belt that was rolled up tight, under my seat for 2 months/ 2k miles.
It refuses to die.





I snapped one on my Uly chasing prairie dogs.

I lost 2 on my Firebolt, but now I know they are fragile and "I" compromised them both.
The 1125 belts are very NOT fragile.

BTW, I now carry a used belt as a spare in the spot in the pic.
I also carry all the tools necessary to change the belt, roadside, in 45-60 minutes.
Biggest hurdle was the axle, so I modified a 7/8" combination wrench so I could carry it too.

With my enhanced tool kit and my tire repair kit, there simply is no room for a spare belt under the seat of my 1125R.

I don't ride mine that hard though and I avoid riding in dirty roads. I don't wheelie, I don't down shift near redline, I don't drag race. I can ride fast but not nearly as much as I like. My belt on both my 1125R and my Firebolt have never had any issues. In fact, back when I first got my 1125R, I had a fastener come loose and rub the crap out of my belt and make a horrific noise while riding. I thought for sure my original belt would fail after that but so far so good after 5k miles after that incident! I bought a spare belt but so far, the original belt has held up.

I also have the factory belt guards in place.

George there has to be something that's causing the failures. these belts don't snap for no reason. alignment rough spot on gears etc.

George, I wish I had an easy answer. It could be anything. Crash damage, factory defect, hell it could be something else causing harm to your belts, like a defective front pulley shock absorber. Either way, changing your belts more often than the oil is not normal.

Something is twisted, that's for sure.

I'm getting roughly 25k *track* miles from each belt.

The belt drive is good stuff for a street application.

If there's a BIG disadvantage to the belt drive, it's that it munches bearings and Mg race wheels from the tension vs a chain. (And, of course, the lack of gearing options.)

The weight of that rear pulley isn't insignificant, but I consider that the price to pay for the simplicity and cleanliness of the belt system.

Mine snapped at 16000 miles but I feel I am hard on my bike. I weigh 230 and power wheelie often and race a lot against my buddies. I also take off hard almost all the time I love the feel of the massive torque. My belt had cracks in it between some of teeth. It looked like they were just about to rip off, then it snapped on one of my hard take offs. It scared the crap out of me. I thought I blew my trans.

I know of 3 First hand experinces of 09 1125r belt breaking between 15-16000
Mine and two other friends grabbing second and pop goes the belt.

It happened when I grabbed second! This belt had roughly 6k miles on it and was less than a year old! all factory guards are in place and I was on a clean road. The the bike fell once on the opposite side but landed on a box full of clothes no damage was done the bike never touched concrete!

Local HD dealer sold it for 165! I just wish I could figure out what caused it! would a alignment issue let it go for 6k miles before snapping?

I think if there was something rubbing on the belt, it would make a whining noise. The rougher the object, the louder the noise, which will increase and decrease with speed. I had that happen to me.

I think on my next tire change I will make a thorough inspection. Or maybe just put my new spare belt on for good measure. My bike has 18k miles.

next time you buy a belt look at the instructions, specifically about bending and kinking the belts. The under the seat belt in Zac4mac's picture shows a mishandled belt.

…brought mine home from the salvage yard in dec last year…initial inspection revealed a hole in the middle of the belt ( about 3/16 dia)
a) there was a big nick on the idler pulley – it is “hard” anodized – had to use a sharpening “stone” to smooth out the nick – GH17, inspect your pulley
b) some of the plastic belt guards come too close to the edges of the belt – took a Dremel and a rotary file to the “ribs/edges” on the guards that came close to the belt
c) Put on a new belt …and about 50 miles later the rear wheel bearing let go – GH17 check your wheel brgs…could be “loose” causing a mis-alignment ( especially when torque is applied) and with the torque these motors put out – the belt could catch an edge, get cut and snap
d) Check the pulleys – the pulleys are hard, but small rocks can be harder (especially granite like you might have up there in O H 10) and imbed into one of the pulleys causing a sharp edge to wear/cut the belt over a period of time
e) Change out the pulleys with a new/used set

Thanks for the info guys. I was really pissed yesterday because the 1125r Is so close to being the "best buy" in used motorcycles in my eyes. If it just had the reliability of your modern day jap bikes!

In stock trim, these are really reliable bikes IMHO.

They have quirks, for sure, but overall are very dependable in my experience.

One year old and less than 5K miles 09 1125R (hard to do more miles while it is in the dealer for repair so often)

Coolant leak
Clutch fluid leak
Broken wire in Ignition switch
Stator replaced
Rotor replaced

Obviously a stellar example of reliability, sigh!

Winner of the most unreliable vehicle ever owned in my life award by a very large margin.
