2007 Uly with 40,xxx miles. I haven't got the exact total yet, but the HD shop gave me a rough price of $3600.00 to fix the crank and related parts that are wrecked. (waiting on a final estimate) Kelly Blue Book says retail value is $5510.00 I love my bike but...more than 1/2 the bikes value to repair? I have never parted a bike out before so I have no idea of it's value in parts. I have to make a decision by Tuesday.  Today is a bad day. | ||

Kelly Blue is high. My guess is that they are worth about the repair cost, HOWEVER Now that the cranks are out our bikes are worth........NOTHING! | ||

It is the first time in this motorcycling chapter of my life where I've felt there was nothing else out there that I would enjoy riding as the bike(s)I already have. I feel for ya man. There's not much point in installing another 2007 engine which may wind up with the same issues as your original. You can upgrade to the newer 2008-up engine but that gets expensive and involved (see my thread). It's a toss-up whether it's more trouble to do the 2008-up swap, rebuild the original engine with a 2008-up crank, or part out your old bike and find a decent 2008-up Uly. Good luck. | ||

I feel for you, Man. I went through the same anguish after a broke and irresponsible indy screwed up and caused my beautiful 1996 Sportster Custom to implode a couple of months ago. The bike is worth about what I paid for the repair, which bugged BIG TIME, but I wanted the bike, and it was not the Harley Shop's fault. Tough choice and it all comes down to what that particular bike is worth to you. My 96' will be with me until the end. Best of luck. | ||

get a used 07 engine, find a good mechanic or some uly guy ready to help you, i'm sure there must be some one ready to help, if I lived in the US, and had a bit of free time, I'd be helping. Best of luck on your decision. Pinwall on ebay gets a lot of Buell stuff, so they may have and engine. | ||

get a used 07 engine We are up to at least 5 2007 model Ulys with bad crankshafts just on Badweb now. I would NOT buy another 2007 engine or 2007 Ulysses. | ||

imo it is what the bike is worth to you,if you like it, if you want to keep it, or if you want to move on, there seems to be some good prices on on used buells, check engine interchangability, or look into SandS or Jims performance, id give Zippers performance a call, just sayin good luck life is like a box of chocolets | ||

From a purely economic view, it would be better to part the bike out and buy a good used Uly. I bought my 06 for $4,500, with 3,800 miles on it, and looked new. If you could part out the bike for $900, where repairing cost $3,600 and a good used bike is $4,500, you would be money even and potentially have a lower mileage bike. If you could part it out for more (likely) you would be ahead. My 2 cents. | ||

Depending how you are fixed economically speaking, maybe you would just hold on to your broken ULY until such time that an engine becomes available at a good price. In the mean time, buy another bike to ride. Parting out your bike seems a bit harsh to me and shortsighted. From your profile I see that you are from Minnesota so your riding season will be over soon anyway. You have quite a few months to look for a good replacement engine. Once you find that, you can part out the ruined engine if you so desire. | ||

I bit the bullet and rebuilt my 06 Uly. It will be basically a brand new engine when finished. I may sell it after I break it in as I just don't find the Uly that comfortable for ME. | ||

Get an earlier engine if the 07 spooks you, 04-05-06. Pinwall is a stand up company as far as my dealings with them. Swapping the engine is really an easy job and can be done in a few hours by someone with some mechanical know how and a handfull of tools. | ||

It would be helpful if all Uly owners could post their mileage, build dates and if there have been crank failures so we could accumulate a data base. May be we could see patterns so we know what bikes are in the failed or likely to fail mfg lot and which are outside it. There have been no failures at less than 19k miles to date that I know of. My record shows three 2007s that were manufactured in Sept 2006, one in Jul 2006. The two 2006s that failed were both higher mileage- 40k-54k. But some failures' owners haven't posted build dates so that's incomplete. | ||

Eric- this problem seems to be mostly limited to 2007 models. Several 06's have done very high mileages (well over 40k) without problems. The 08-up engine is definitely an improvement. It has a 1.5 inch vs. 1.25 inch crank pin and a completely revised oiling system with larger oil cooler. | ||

My 07 failed at 29K miles. My next move...bring it home...broken. I am going to go and pick up the bike from La Crosse HD on Thursday. HD has torn down the motor and made a detailed parts list...totaling almost $1700. I am going to take the bike and the list of broken parts to a couple of small shops near me. I am going to see if they can fix it for less than HD can. Question...if I rebuild the '07 motor will I just be fixing a motor that will have the same vulnerability? or do the new parts fix the design flaw??? If they can not fix it for a reasonable price I will... 1. Buy an '08 or '09 and keep my '07 for parts. 2. Part it out and buy a different brand of motorcycle. |
