About 1600 miles total per bike. Two Uly's, 2006 and 2007 years. Mine, the 06', now has over 33,000 miles. My son's 07 has about 13,000 miles. Biggest(and only) problem was that both ULY's needed re-fuelling periodically, hate when that happens. Rained and hailed every day but lots of sun every day also. We met my older brother out there. He rode out, from Iowa, his 2001 Harley LowRider with over 80,000 miles on it. Looks brand new. He tows a trailer with it that he made for our 2002 trip to Sturgis. Towing trailers really shortens rear tire life severely according to my bro, but he likes being able to bring a ton of shiit along. Besides the fact that a LowRider really doesn't pack as well as a ULY with full hard bags. We camped at Dalton Lake and besides the camp host, we were the only campers there. Very secluded and wildlife abounds. Rainbow trout jumping all the time in the small lake. Resident Blue Heron and King Fisher birds fishing the lake constantly. Deer visited lake and gobs of wild turkey with their broods seen when riding to and from camp up to main road (Vanocker Canyon Road). Temps would get down into the high 40's at night and 70's during the day. Perfect temps for tent sleeping at night. Four miles on hard packed gravel road to get down to Dalton Lake campground. For some reason, a 2009 XB1200XT rode down and visited us on our 4th day. Guy was in his 60's and had owned Harleys for years and took a chance on buying a fully outfitted 09' after the Buell shutdown. No regrets, he loves his bike. Gave me his email address so I could send him my BadWeb photo tutorial on building an Oil Temp Dipstick. All three of us took a gravel road (Runkles Road) across a range of high country and thank God it didn't rain. Runkles comes to another gravel road called Bethlehem Road and after that Runkles went to rutted and muddy dirt. After a few hundred feet of that we turned around and made our way back to Bethlehem Road and hoped to find our way back to civilization. Eventually we did and we took a few photos along the way. Coming down the back side of that high country was very steep in spots and my son was only using his front brake because he thought his rear Uly brake didn't work. How he didn't wipeout is a mystery. At the bottom I found out what he was doing and proved to him that his rear brake was just fine and that ULY rear brakes only feel dead but really do work. Some how he was able to not wreck but I'm sure glad I was able to properly re-educate him before he found out the hard way. Where are the photo's? I'll wait until my brother sends me all his before I fill out this travelogue with a smattering from both his and my camera. | ||

On the way back a Bueller came up to me at the Chadron, NE gas stop. He was on his way back from the Black Hills on a tuber and he said that days earlier, on his way up to Sturgis, his header pipe for the rear cylinder had broke in two just a few inches from the head and he had noticed it at this same gas station. A local auto repair shop just a couple of buildings away welded up the removed header and didn't charge him a dime. Wasn't a beautiful weld to look at but it was holding just fine. Then on his way back from Sturgis he stops at this same gas station, when I met him, and he finds that he has a 1/2" nut embedded in his drive belt. I saw it and told him to remove it with a pair of pliers but he wanted to leave it alone and all he could talk about was that he wanted to go to a chain since belts were a pain in his estimation. He talked kind of slow and deliberate like an old pot head. I didn't think of it at the time but wish I had taken a photo of him and his bike and buell t-shirt. He had a small crowd around his bike while he lamented his problems so I walked back to our fine running ULY's and hauled ass. | ||

I'm still here in Sturgis and will stay through the rally. I'm camping at Lamphere Ranch out by the Full Throttle Saloon and close to the action. Haven't seen another Uly except at the dealer and have only seen two other Buells among the several hundred thousand bikes. I did get to see the 1190 down on Main Street though! Amsoil had one on display. A great rally so far and the weather has been especially good. | ||

Buellerxt, At exit 32 into Sturgis go up Vanocker Canyon road until you get to Runkles Road which is marked by a street sign, maybe 10 miles or so. If you get to the Wonderland Cave exit you've gone to far. Take a left unto Runkles and go until you get to Bethlehem road where you take a left. Bethlehem will take you eventually to Interstate 90. Beautiful ride through the forest and is all hard pack gravel. Nice little adventure. | ||

I was at Sturgis last week on my '09 X, saw a Blast and Blue X from Texas on main street the day we went thru town....also passed a couple of XT's while riding in Custer State Park.....had to ride the Uly down Main Street, figure it is now really "broken in". 10,000 miles on it so far with zero problems, it performed beautifully on the entire trip (1,500 miles) and averaged at or a little above 50mpg. That area is a great place to ride, Spearfish Canyon being a gem. | ||

We put on almost 1400 miles as well this past week. Beautiful weather when we dodged the hail in Rapid City and Nemo, and the earthquake in Pierre!! 3.4 on the Richter Scale! I yanked a few photos from the pro photographers along Needles and Iron Mountain Road. | ||

I just got back last night after 9 days of camping and riding the Hills and didn't notice another Buell except for a white tuber I saw in Hill City and some race bikes in a display at the Rapid Harley dealers circus (the dealership had a 09 XT for sale for 8500 with some rash on the bags). I camp with a bunch of folks mostly from Central Montana in Keystone every year but have noticed that the FS campgrounds are mostly empty except for the one right on the road between Hill City and Custer. Maybe we should have a little Buell get together somewhere in the Hills next year, might be fun. | ||

Right on, Smokey. Buells are statistically NON EXISTENT at Sturgis and most everywhere else. We like ours and that is cool but most don't care about them, don't care about hearing about them, don't care about seeing them, etc. No problem. A Buell is a motorcycle and nothing more, like other motorcycles. I like seeing other Buells but I rarely do. | ||

Promised photos Representing somewhere in midst of Sandhills of Nebraska betwixt Valentine, NE and Chadron, NE on State Highway 20, very desolate. Our campground is 4 miles down gravel road exactly 20 miles from Sturgis into Black Hills Forest. Only ones using the entire campground other than the resident host couple who were extremely nice  At Rapid City Harley Davidson which is a big deal during Sturgis Rally. They sold about 200 to 300 bikes during the week.  | ||

More photos Runkles road just past the Bethlehem road intersection which is also gravel but maintained, unlike what you see here  Sage on Runkles. He rides real well. Notice the large holes in road right behind him  Same place from different perspective  Further down Bethlehem road. Beautiful trout stream. The crossing was cement but the road was gravel. Brother on his Hog. He was a Harley mechanic for Cedar Rapids, Iowa Harley for quite a few years back in the 70's. He's got that bike outfitted with a transmission cooler that cools his engine oil, scavenger side. Pulled that trailer about 800 miles in one day at 85 mph back to Iowa City and didn't burn a drop of oil.    | ||

Over to Devil's Tower, Wyoming. Stopped at new visitor center on entering Wyoming on US I90. Very nice place to take a break and get a drink.   Huelett, Wyoming. One horse town but gets real busy during Rally.   | ||

I think I saw that Hoss in Keystone. We stopped one day at the Honda shop in Spearfish to see if they had any used Urals and this cute little sales girl came out and wanted to talk Buells, she had two, a M2 and S3. She said she was always interested in the Uly but she thought it was too high in the seat, she'd noticed mine was lowered and wanted to know what I'd done to it. It's funny about the bike either people ignore it or come up and ask how I like it and say something like, "I wish I'd have got one". |
