I've posted here before concerning my bike and a back firing issue with aftermarket exhaust. I put the Eric Buell racing ECM on the bike and the back firing stopped. I put the ECM on that is programed for the Drummer exhaust. The Erik Buell Racing techs wanted to know if my bike had the wire on the exhaust. At that time I wasn't quite sure what they were talking about. Now I do. My question is what does the cable on top of the air box do to the muffler? It is operable. Also is there an advantage or dis-advantage to taking the baffles out of the Special Op exhaust?

Which exhaust are you using?

The stock exhaust and the Special Ops have what is called the interactive exhaust valve. The muffler is really 2 exhaust systems in 1, and there is a valve inside the muffler that opens and closes depending on how you are riding it.

When you are going wide open throttle at higher RPMs, the valve will open and direct the exhaust gases to take a straight through route to optimize power. When you aren't beating on it, the exhaust takes the long way around, giving better low and mid range power, and keeping noise levels down.

The Drummer does not have this valve, so if your ECM is programmed for a Drummer it will not be functional. The Special Ops one has it and is programmed to take advantage of it.

The cable you mention goes from the valve on the muffler to the actuator servo which is mounted on the airbox.

I have the Special Op exhaust using the Erik Buell Racing ECM for the Drummer exhaust. Erik Buell Racing doesn't make a ECM for a 2009 Ulysses using the Special Op exhaust. They said some of their customers have had success with this combination. If I wasn't satisfied I could then buy the Drummer muffler and be perfect. She runs ok, but I think she could run better. The cable is hooked up from the air box to the muffler. When you pop the throttle it does activate at the muffler.
