today i just put in some amsoil and i went for a ride and not went to look at my engine temp and it is now 211c when i got home. it used to run at 190c when it was hot out.. i htought that amsoil was supposed to keep it a tiny bit cooler. |

May I ask what oil you were using prior to changing to Amsoil? |

I don't think the difference in temp is due to the oil change. |

From a scientific point of view there shouldn`t have been any difference in temperature as both Amsoil and Mobil 1 Vtwin are both synthetic, if you were switching from a mineral oil there should have been a shift downward in temperature. Having said that I also noticed a similar difference when switching from Castrol Syntec to Amsoil so after one oil change I switched back. What I noticed was a drop in idle rpm and after switching back to the Castrol the idle came back up which to me means less friction. Now that Castrol has discontinued Syntec I will probably switch to Mobil 1 as we sell it at the shop also. |

Let me know how your ride goes this weekend and the temps you encounter |

Cylinder head temp won't change much switching oils, you need to check the oil temp. |

ok the only reason i said this is that the head temp was 25C higher after i changed the oil. not extremely hot outside . it just seemed weird to me. |

Not Amsoil but HarLee's Syn3 makes the cooling fan come on a lot on the XBs compared to Mobil 1 15/50. I dumped that Syn3 out after about 500 miles and went back to Mobil 1. |

well i will give it a little while to see how she runs, if it keeps running hot then i will dump the amsoil then go back to my mobil 1 |

If you want your comparison to be valid you have to make sure that ALL the parameters are identical between the two samples, identical ambient temperatures, identical routes, identical speed, etc. So one or two rides are not good enough to draw any valid conclusions. "From a scientific point of view there shouldn`t have been any difference in temperature as both are both synthetic..." That may be true but my X1 runs on average 20C cooler with Royal Purple 20/50. |

What is your oil level in the tank now that it is running hot? Kilroy |

is it possable that a hotter running oil pulls mure heat from the engine? and a cooler running oil dosnt absorb and disapate the heat as well? just one of those things i ponder. |

well the oil level is 3/4 the way up the dipstick when hot. |

ok well i went on a 45 min ride today and checked the head temp and it it was only 180c much cooler then the 212 i had the other day. so i am thinking that maybe it is the head temp sensor.. and i just noticed that the plastic piece on top of the head temp sensor is loose and vibrating around.. idk if this is a problem but i would think it is. |

"well the oil level is 3/4 the way up the dipstick when hot." I keep mine near the lower 1/4 mark on the stick when checked within a minute after turning the engine off with the bike straight up (not on sidestand). |

"well the oil level is 3/4 the way up the dipstick when hot." Wow... if there is anything more than a 1/8 inch on the bottom of my stick it comes out the breather. |

Where I noticed the biggest change was putting Amsoil in the trans. It shifted easier and quicker. |

I use amsoil exclusively now and since i know a local private distributor i am getting it $9.50 a qt. Eric buell racing bikes come new with amsoil in them so why not use it. |
