Has anyone attempted to open, clean, and re-assemble the stock ignition switch? I have a 2001 X-1 and pulled it last night (replaced with temporary harness/toggle switch). The bottom isn't assembled with screws so I was wondering if anyone had opened them up. I would like to keep one key for all locks. Thanks |

I am not sure how well it will re-assemble since it is press fit and sealed. If you have your vin and or key number you can order a matching ignition with key to match all your other locks... |

Just buy one of these: http://www.americansportbike.com/shoponline/ccp0-p rodshow/16033.html And have it re-keyed. It's a MUCH better quality switch. There is a thread on here somewhere where a member took his apart and cleaned it. 2 potential problems: 1) by the time most people realize the symptoms, the ignition is fried, not just dirty. And 2) you will likely destroy the housing trying to take it apart. Good luck either way! |

I just replaced mine with a 2004 Dyna FXD ignition switch. Ordered it with my key number so everything still matches. Plugged right in, fit the dash perfect. Has an accessory position which is no big deal. More money than Al's but I wanted the locks to match. |

Bpt, without the price you paid why even reply? |

Thanks to all that have replied, I appreciate ALL of your recommendations. Now I need to decide how to proceed. Due to a flooded basement I certainly don't have the funds for the guard dog. Even though my switch is probably toast I can't resist the temptation of pulling it apart to see why it failed. A simple mechanical switch should last longer than this one has. |

Sorry, I didn't not think about the price. The Buell lock set with saddlebags was $260, the Dyna ignition switch alone was $100. |

I pulled mine apart knowing going into it that it might not make it. It didn't. Once I got the rivets drilled out and opened up it was beyond salvagable. I've just been using a rocker switch with great results and I still only have to carry one key. |

I have a '99 S3T with the same ignition switch problem. Took the advice and bought the ignition switch from American Sport Bike listed here. Switch is great, same color wiring harness. Already installed, fits and works good. However, I took it to get it re-keyed before I installed it and was told that it is not a serviceable lock (can't be re-keyed). Now I 've got two different keys. Oh well, if it bugs me enough I can always order a Harley switch with the VIN and key number. |
