I thought I'd post an introduction since I'm new to the board. I've been riding for about 18 years, various makes and models, but just bought my first Buell. Some of you may know "Nadz" from this board. He currently rides a Uly, but before that had a 04 XB12R that was wrecked due to a drunk driver hitting him 2 years ago. I told him then that if he ever wanted to sell the salvage, I would buy it. He made up his mind to sell it, and we made a deal. So now I have his old 2004 XB12R, and I'm going to do my best to bring it back to its former glory. Here's some pictures of the current state: Everything in the front end will need to be replaced, except for the headlights (have spares), gauges, and possibly the wheel. I will also need to find an oil cooler, primary cover, and a few various other parts. I'm used to working on my own bikes, so I don't think any of this will be too difficult for me. I just need to make some room! I'm plan to have all the parts that I need inventoried by this weekend, and hopefully through the parts section here can source some things. If anyone reading this post has some take-offs that they would like to get rid of at a fair price, feel free to PM me. I'll be spending a lot of time on this board trying to learn as much as I can about these bikes! If any of you are ever swinging through the Upstate NY area, please feel free to contact me. We have a secure garage, spare bedroom, and cold beverages that are always available to any rider in need! Plus a truck that has hauled its share of bikes over the years, should anyone need a roadside rescue. |

Welcome and GL. Their are still a few places to get the parts you need. Check out the classifieds as i have seen the parts you need there in the past. |

NY is a vast area. Where are you? Theres a few of us in the Hudson Valley that could always use another riding partner |

Hammer71 - Near Syracuse. I have some good friends near Albany and Saratoga Springs, so I get out that way at least a few times each season. |

Those do not look like stock headlights, what are they? |

They look to be Hella projectors. I have a set I was going to use for the same conversion before my wreck. |

90mm Hellas. The bike used to belong to Nadz, another user on here. He did a whole lot of modifications to it. Heated grips, throttle lock, lights, hand guards, GPS and phone mounts, etc. That's the reason I have a set of stock headlights, he still had them when he replaced them. |

I would suggest the Hella over the stock lights. How much of the fixture is broken? Is the mount actually damaged or just the mounting corners in the fixture? |

The whole fixture is shot. All the brackets between the neck and the plastic fairing are mangled beyond use. The only reason it looks "okay" in the photos is due to the bungee net holding everything together. I'll open it up this week and inventory everything. The hellas are definitely a better light than stock, but I have a brand new set of stock lights here that I can use to get it back to running form. I'm all about upgrades - after I get it working again. |

There are a few of us familiar with the Hella upgrade if you need help. Pictures of what you have and what is broken would help us point you in the right direction. |

Just a quick update. I'm headed to Afghanistan soon, so I'm trying to get my parts list finished up before I go so I can keep sourcing replacement parts. It's been hectic, so I haven't had much time to wrench. I did pick up a replacement ignition from the HD dealer, since the original was smashed. With this, I can at least put power to the circuits and see what else might need replacing. When picking up the part, I mentioned that "the bike has some problems that need to be fixed" and I got the reply "well, the blue logo (the buell logo on the box) is your biggest problem." Glad to see that the staff of Performance HD continue to live up to my expectations of them. Most of their staff are great - but there's always one or two who shouldn't be dealing with customers. Regardless of the brand, if a customer comes in, orders a part, and pays for it, you don't knock what the part is for. Funny how I didn't get any comments when ordering the part and buying their last Buell shirt on the clearance rack, and I showed up on the Fatboy with 16" ape hangers... Anyways, the last Buell shirt they had: (Message edited by StarWolve on July 27, 2011) |

They didn't seriously say that did they? One of the parts guys owned both an XB9R and then went to an XB12R after a couple of years of riding the 9R. Wonder if he quit. Also did you make their name a link? If not they are a sponsor. Wish I had realized that the key switch was smashed, I could have suggested some jumpers to turn it on so you didn't need to buy a new switch. I recommend that you get the service and parts books for that year, I only have 03 material so it may not be much help depending on the parts needed. |

Greg - My buddy Nadz hooked me up with all the manuals, including the parts one. As far as the ignition - I know I could have jumpered around it, but I plan on putting it back to stock and I'd like to have the fork lock working. The whole housing was smashed beyond repair, so I needed that part anyways. They couldn't get matching keys, but that's okay, I like to be able to leave the key in to gas up if I'm riding an Iron Butt or something like that. (Yes, I will do an Iron Butt on this bike someday. Why not?) I did make the name a link, just in case anyone wanted to know which dealership I was referring to. And yes, he did say that. There are some really good techs and sales people there, in fact one is helping me track down some used parts. However, I seem to have the ability to find the worst out of the bunch when I walk in. One time I showed up for a Buell test ride, and they wouldn't let me ride because I didn't ride a bike there, I drove my truck. Another story about them. In 2002, I was looking to buy a new bike. I was 21, but had the money. I walked in there and said to a salesman "I want to buy a 2003 Fatboy, all black, carb not EFI, with a security system." His response "we don't have any of those on the floor right now, can I show you a sportster?" Yes, their sales guy tried to talk me out of a $17,000 sale for a $6,500 bike. I think he was judging my ability to pay by my age. I asked the same question to Geneva Harley (great people, but further away from me) and the OWNER of the dealership looked as his incoming inventory sheet and said "How's October 1st for a delivery date?" No hassle, no questioning my ability to pay, and they got the sale. My dad has bought 2 bikes from them, and they always treat my family well. I don't go there often, maybe once or twice a year, but they still know me by name. As far as the deployment, I can't say when exactly, but it's weeks, not months. I'll have a whole year to look for parts, but I would like to have most of them waiting for me when I get home on R&R leave. After not riding or wrenching for months, I know I'll want to work on it during R&R. I see you're in Syracuse - I might know you and not "know" it! I'm a regular at County Line Choppers, and usually end up helping out at open house parties and shows. I'm usually riding a 03 Fatboy with apes hangers, and a bright ass orange helmet. When I get back, I'll have to meet up with you. Never hurts to know another rider, and my garage and truck are always available to help out. I'm surprised you don't get grief for the Apes, hands must be lower than shoulder height when sitting in NYS, your's would be close enough for any cop having a bad day. |

Just barely, and not when I slouch, and not when I roll them forward a few degrees. I've been pulled over for them twice, but they were quoting the old law (15" from the lowest part of the seat to the highest part of the bars). After explaining to the nice officer the new law, and demonstrating that mine are in fact legal... I was interrogated some more and eventually left without a ticket. Everything on the bike, including the helmet and pipes, are completely legal in NY. The only problem I have now is that military bases require 2 mirrors, I only have 1. |

Sent you a PM with my contact info. I should be there, I live about 20 minutes away. I'll be on the bike pictured above. If you guys want to stop out to my house afterwards and check out the Buell, you're welcome to. There's also a great little ice cream place nearby if you're not too full of BBQ. |

Chris, Drop me a line, I've got a used original muffler, front signals, levers (not the perches though). I'm in Syracuse - near the valley. Thanks for your service, my son in law is heading over there with the Marines. |

PM sent - but I think I have those parts. Nadz gave me several boxes of stock parts to go with it, and he has a stock Uly exhaust for me. If the Army wasn't taking all my time, I'd have my "parts needed" list done by now! |

Yesterday I cleaned out the garage to make a little more room, and couldn't resist a shot with most of my bikes lined up outside: With the garage cleaned up a bit, I had some room to work on the Buell. I took off almost all the broken parts: The oil cooler and air scoop will need to be replaced, and if it won't straighten out, the subframe where it mounts: I tied up all the electrical connections in a bag so I can work on the forks once I find a replacement. So, good and bad. The gauges came out intact. Everything else in the fairing needs to be replaced, including the ECM. It's intact, but the mounting tabs are broken. The left side rider bracket will need to be replaced, and there are 2 broken bolts in the frame that I will have to extract. The right side controls and master cylinder are shot and the throttle cables need new ends put on them. The right side passenger bracket is tweaked, and possibly the mount on the tail section where it bolts in, but I don't care, I don't plan on using passenger pegs at all. All in all, it's not a lot of parts to replace. I have a replacement oil cooler, ignition switch, and headlights, but if anyone has any of the other parts that they'd like to sell, let me know. |

OK, ignore the other thread... Unless you really want a new ECM I would fix the mounting tabs on the old ECM and use it. Do you have the broken piece to glue it back together? The headlight mount might be able to be salvaged for another Hella fixture because of the couple of ways to do this upgrade some people have made a complete flat plate to attach the fixtures and it bolts to the main part of the plastic mount. Were the fuse box and relay box OK? the part numbers are known and sometimes you can find them for sale, all that would be needed would be to swap all the connectors if they are wrecked. The W bracket thing up front is easy to get used so I wouldn't be too concerned. |

The fuse box and relay box were okay, but the covers are missing on the relay one. The Hella upgrade will be nice, but I already have a set of stock lights I can use for the time being. When I decide to upgrade those, I'm sure I can make a plate to make them work. The ECM also has damaged connector shrouds on it. It might work to prove the motor with some epoxy to hold the tab back in place. I've had a few people recommend the Erik Buell Racing ECM, but I might wait until I've had a chance to upgrade the exhaust. There's also a few connectors that are damaged, so might need to replace them. |

If the connector plastic is damaged then it may have damaged the circuit board too, the board in not very forgiving. I would keep an eye out for a used xb12 ECM (03 to 07), sometimes you can find them for very little money. You can always then program them with ECMspy or TunerPro RT. Actually it looks like the W bracket is fine so I think all you need is the oil cooler/voltage regulator mount. The plastic on the left side can be ordered from the dealer or any of the sponsors here, I think American Sport Bike has a lot of that in stock. You might search for some of the threads on the upgrade to the larger cooler, it takes different fittings so I think you need custom hoses, might be worth it since yours is wrecked and it will help keep the motor cool. |

Keep in mind that you could go with an Erik Buell Racing ECM now with the stock exhaust, and then have it re-flashed when you decide to upgrade. I think it's only $50 to reflash for changes to the exhaust. I can't say enough good things about the Erik Buell Racing ECM compared to stock. |
