Hey there Uly family, After finding the check engine light on, I realized that the valve actuator is sticking in onme position during initial check. I too have a failing valve actuator. It looks like a replacement runs about $168.00. If I fool around with it, I can make it work. But fixing it will take having a good one taken apart to know the actual mechanics involved. Question here is: Should I replace the box? Or, just go ahead and get a new muffler system that doesn't use the actuator valve? Riding with a valve in only one position makes you realize that the stock system does work. Open to all suggestions. Ulybrew (Message edited by Ulybrew on July 28, 2011) |

Get a new servo. A muffler that does not have the valve will give you one end of the range or the other. The only way to get both sides of the deal is with the switchable exhaust path. |

With the servo out - the valve stays closed. That means that the exhaust, takes the long way 'round. It will be quieter, but hurt the top end. Either open or closed, it will not hurt the engine. So no worries there. |

Get one off ebay. http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p519 7.m570.l1313&_nkw=buell+servo&_sacat=See-All-Categ ories While you wait. Use ECM Spy to switch off the exhaust servo. Then set the valve to stay full open. |

If you set the ECM to keep the muffler valve wide open (or just physically wire it wide open), you get a big hole in the mid-range. I rode my Uly for about 2 weeks that way after my engine swap. I got a used servo from another Badwebber cheap and installed it; I found it to be a big improvement. I went ahead and bought a new servo too (latest version with metal gears) which I'll installed when this one fails. |

Yea, but leather tassels hanging from your grips REALLY makes you fast! |

Did you mean grips or nips? |

Are these actuators all the same? I have a 2008. Will the 2006 work ? |

I went to a Drummer w/out the actuator and mine runs fantastic! |

Stock muffler without an actuator runs like poo. Drummer doesn't have a valve, so it runs pretty good without the actuator. Mine still runs better with Erik Buell Racing ECM and stock muffler - with working valve - than it did with the old accessory "Race" ECM and a Drummer. Ulybrew - the actuators will all "work", but the later model years have metal gears instead of plastic so they're a little more durable. DON'T FORGET - the actuator cable is one you need to lube along with your throttle and clutch cables, at service intervals. |

Mine is wired open with the K&N filter and I love it. I do get a CEL now and then but she runs Great for the way I ride, above 3000rpm all or most or the time. |

""Mine is wired open with the K&N filter and I love it"" +1, same set up - I adjusted my fuel map for that configuration, and it runs much better than stock. Nice throaty sound when I get on it. With it wired open, you pretty much have a strait shot out the pipe .. |

I look at performance as including "miles to empty time" rather than just "rear wheel only time". However, I still need a little "grin time". Any of you experimenters out there care to comment on your fuel economy with and without the exhaust valve? |

""Any of you experimenters out there care to comment on your fuel economy with and without the exhaust valve?"" Yes, of course, I saw a 0.975 MPG increase after I opened mine up. But I was riding east the whole time, and as we all know, that coincides with the earth's directional rotation, which theoretically, can account for such variances (e.g., slightly greater than 2%). ... |

Make sure it's not the cable that's frayed and sticking things up. Mine's fraying right now, where it exits the sheath at the bottom. |

I have an 05 Firebolt, and I have run with the stock set-up for quite some time. This season, I wired the valve open. I have no change in power anywhere, and maaaaybe a mile or so more in mpg. Its just a hair higher than last year. Same gas, same gas station. I will have a k&n soon, and maybe modify the long channel in the exhaust so that the open position of the valve is the "silent" on a silent choice exhaust. Something I have been thinking about. |

09X w/K&N air filter/Erik Buell Racing ecm/Drummer exhaust/Amsoil 20/50 = 45mpg in town and 55mpg open road.. |

After getting crankcase breathers out of airbox, and wiring muffler valve open full time, spent time at steady throttle settings to reset afv, bike is running the best it ever has. have not remapped ecm yet as it is still 07 original. I get 45 to 47 mpg fairly steady with out hotrodding about. no dips or decel popping, just smooth and useable power. The road king is is the slab in my garage. (slow, loud, and banging.) believe that if you want! |
