Ive got a 1999 Cyclone that ive owned now for about two months. Up until last week the bike ran flawless, my first buell and i love it! Last week i went riding up in the mountians and the bike began to miss like hell, stalled on me a few times and didnt want to start. It has slowly gotten worse and at this point isnt rideable. Its having trouble starting now and when it does its running like shit. Seems like a ignition problem but when i check its got good spark. Ive drained the tank, check the filter, cleaned the carb, and checked the batt voltage. No luck yet. What you guys think? Cam sensor? Kick stand switch? Any help would be great. Thanks |

Make sure the wires to the coil are on tight and firm. I've had them just slightly loose and caused all sorts of trouble. They are after all just pushed on so give them a bit of a crimp. |

Ok ill double check them. I did wiggle them yesterday and they were on there pretty good. |

Does it run okay when you pull in the clutch lever? That would indicate kickstand safety switch. Check ground strap integrity. |

Nope it doesnt change a thing. Im thinking that i have a bad ignition rotor/cam sensor. Has anyone ever had come loose and turn on its own. It seriously sounds like a v8 with the distributor way off... |

Is the headlight flickering and is or does the voltage remain constant? Grounding or volt regulation while running? |

I don't like the fact it SLOWLY got worse. |

The headlight stays on and has never gone out. Id test the voltage while running if i could keep it running that long.... The only way i can get it to run is to hold it about half throttle with full choke. And it wont come close to idling. (Message edited by wseaver5001 on July 25, 2011) |

You're on the right track suspecting the cam position sensor. Try removing both plugs and rotating the engine with the transmission in high gear by turning the rear wheel. If you have several weak sparks per revolution, your cam position sensor has failed. Drill the rivets out, undo the screws holding the cover plate on, and smell for burning semiconductors. |

I gave it a try. Lifted it up put it in 5th and after about 10 turns of the back wheel not a single spark. As soon as a hit the starter i get a almost constant spark from both plugs...Any other tests i can try? |

Uh, you did ground the plugs and turn the ignition on while turning the wheel, right? That "almost constant" sparking is way more than once each per rev - which means the cam position sensor is dead or dying. I use an aftermarket XL sensor and trigger rotor now. |

Lol yes i grounded the plugs, key on and switch to run. Im gonna go ahead and change it. What's the advantage of the aftermarket unit? Where do i get one? Thanks harley..... (Message edited by wseaver5001 on July 26, 2011) |
