It's been a while since I've pulled my primary chain. I've gotten the crank shaft nut off but the mainshaft nut is just spinning. What am I missing? Or is this an indicator of other problems (removing everything to replace the crank seal)

Sounds like it is stripped and you better hope it is the nut and not the main shaft ...
