I changed fluids yesterday and decided to take a look inside the primary. Looked pretty good inside, the shoe was almost at good as new, but there were some scratch marks on the top of the case where the chain rubbed against the case. That's as far as I got, I didn't remove the chain or anything else. Put it all back, filled transmission fluid to specs and took it for a ride. First gear is a little tight, I couldn't manage to get it into 2nd or more! Then I ran out of Buell time for the day BTW, I didn't adjust the chain after I put the case back. I've to do that. Could that be the reason for the problem with shifting? |

Well..I thought I did..did it per the manual. "Turned the screw till it lightly bottomed out, then turned 1/4th the other way" The put in the hex plate and the spring. For the clutch adjustment, I have the adjuster pretty much bottomed out and then tightened the nut. It feels a little tighter than before though |

Primary chain could be too tight: I've to take care of that Clutch adjustment: You're referring to adjusting the tightness of the cable using the adjuster on the cable (just below the front of the tank, right?) Could be a little too tight, I guess I didn't touch the drive belt or the shift pawl during my primary case opening, so it shouldn't have changed from previous adjustments. |

"That's as far as I got, I didn't remove the chain or anything else." So you "also" did adjust the clutch, right? |

Wow. You did NOT adjust the chain once you reinstalled everything, but you're still trying to figure out why things are being weird? Adjust everything to spec FIRST. Then, ask questions if things are still acting up. To adjust the clutch pack, make sure you turn the screw the CORRECT direction before backing off 1/4 turn. To adjust the cable, set your lever freeplay, don't just "bottom it out and lock the nut". Do it all in order. To spec. Your bike will thank you. |

To be clear: I did adjust the clutch as per the manual, but not the chain.I knew that the tightness of the chain would make it harder to shift, but thought I would be able to get it into gear, my bad.. Anyways, I did all that yesterday. It took a while to get the clutch adjustment correct, but everything works now. That said..shifting is little bit harder now compared to before I opened it up. |
