Hi all, I've installed my barkers exhaust and now just started doing the ECM. When removing the stock ECM there is one bolt holding it in place. When I went to remove it with a socket wrench, I got it loosened but then I got to a point where the nut is not coming off. The whole bolt turns as I try to remove the nut. Am I missing something here or have I missed it up. I recall something about that on the forum before. Getting frustrated. Please help. | ||

The nut should just come off, it sounds like the bolt got stripped. | ||

where exactly did the bolt get stripped? The whole thing is turning. I thought it was a fixed bolt with only the nut to loosen to remove the ECM. Anyone have any solutions. | ||

The nut and bolt are brass mounted in plastic, must be plastic is striped from behind where head of bolt is. | ||

this happened to me if you are lucky stick your hand behind there and hold the bolt with your finger it helps if the bike is cold.If you are unlucky you will have to take the pod off and some how slot it. The bolt is kind of pressure fitted and breaks loose if you tighten it to much hope this helps. Mike | ||

I just did this yesterday. Here's what I did, but do this at your own risk; I guarantee nothing. You need to get a replacement bolt: M6x1.0x30mm (IIRC), and a Stainless Steel Finishing Washers (I know that's not the technical name, but that's what they're called at Lowe's). That should work with the factory nut. Inspect the plastic piece that the ECM bolts to; you should find some torx bits that hold it on to the fan shroud, and sandwich the radiator in place. Locate the upper and lower torx bolts and remove them. I removed 3 bolts, there was a fourth one on the back that didn't need to be removed. This should give you enough room to pry the plastic panel away from the radiator. You should be able to reach the factory bolt when you're prying the panel away from the radiator. That bolt is somehow plastic welded in place, but it came loose on mine too. With my hand behind the plastic panel (to protect the radiator) and the nut still on the bolt, I hit the nut/nolt assembly inward until I could feel and see a good area to hold onto behind the plastic panel. I then used some vise-grip pliers to grab hold of the bolt while I backed out the 10mm nut with the socket set. I replaced the factory bolt with the 30mm one I got, along with the Stainless Steel Finishing Washer to keep it from pulling through the plastic. Holding the new bolt in place with a 10mm open end wrench, I Installed the ECM and threw on the factory washer and nut. Snugged it up just enough to get it tight and that's all there is to it. | ||

I just went out a swapped my ECMs, put the OEM back in. Sounds like maybe too much grunt when it was tightened. If you remove the duct piece the ECM mounts to, I think you can get to the other end of the screw, an M6-1.0, not sure how long. Z |
