I know this may sound stupid but...how do you do a wheelie? I can only do them in first gear, but any other gear, I can't get the bike up. I watch all the other riders on Jap bikes cruise along at 40 or 50, and they just pop up the front and go. they make it look so simple. Could someone please explain to me how to do this with the XB. Do they use the clutch? |

Someone tell me why there isn't any threads dedicated to finding the correct apex of a corner???? I think Keith Code said it best. "A wheelie is the most worthless thing you can do on a motorcycle." Or somethin like that. But if you must know. XB's an Jap bikes two diffent breeds. Most use the clutch some use pure power that a liter bike has depends on bike an rider. I find that most Buells can only do wheelies in first an second, if you are good enough you can carry the front wheel through the gears. Depends on how cumfy you are with your balancing point. I find the best thing to do on my M2 is get up to about 20mph Sit back on the seat, wack the throttle open an ballance. Just remeber to keep your foot over the brake pedal, that could save your ass. Well thats my humble oppinion i'm sure there will be more to follow. |

The only stupid question is the only you don't ask. There are several experts here who may choose to offer counsel. Unfortunately, I'm not one of them. I too suffer "frontus liftus" difficientcy. (sniff) Maybe we should start our own 12 step program. |

If you really want to do this, I dont know your past riding experence. It would be best to get an old dirt bike and practice your balance point and what the bike does with hitting the rear brake to bring down the front and throttle to rise. It is cheeper to use an old bike to learn because chances are good you will go down a few times when learning. It looks easier than it is and if your bike goes down a big repair bill to you and or your bike will be the result. Be safe wear your gear I know it looks kool but my advice dont do this stunt. Chris enjoy your ride. Tim |

of course this is on a closed road, I found that shifting kinda hard into second (shift at maybe ~6k) will bring it up. thats how I started practicing 2nd gear wheelies. now I can just roll at 40 (~4k 2nd), clutch in, gas then release clutch. (dont try this at home) first gear is so short and jerky, second I found goes longer and throttle response is not as violent. and yes, I've seen what happens when things go terribly wrong.

Okay, I DO NOT condone this activity on open roads. This should only be done in a controlled environment. With that said, here goes. There are basically two ways to do a wheelie. 1) Power wheelie: This is where you use the engines torque to get the front end up. During your roll, get your RPMs into the peak torque range. Cut and snap the throttle. This will cause the front forks to dip, and then you will use the rebound to help lift the front of the bike up. 2) Clutched wheelie: During your roll, pull the clutch into the friction zone, just enough to get the clutch to release, raise the RPMs a few thousand, then release the clutch. The surge of power should lift the bike. Rules: ALWAYS cover the rear brake. If things get sketchy, just tap the brake and back down you go. When you get the front end up where you can't or can barely see over the front of the bike (depends on the bike), you are right around the balance point. You should practice these on a dirt bike. I grew up on them. Going down on the pavement sucks. I know from experience. (Not my fault though) Keep in mind that wheelies are the easiest stunt to do, but the hardest to explain. These are just a general idea of how to do them. With all of that said, be safe. Keep the shiny side up. |

Hey, Thanks for all the advice and I will practice on my dirt bike. I have a 97 YZ250. Like I said before, I can do a wheelie in 1st gear but not any other gear, that is what I want to try. To me finding that balance point is sketchy...afraid of loopin' the bike. Spent to much money to piss it away on a foolish trick! |

As Spider man reiterated from Keith code..why do you want to learn to do something as pointless as a wheelie, the only aspect of this I think that is useful is in being able to manage the front wheel when you get it up thru operator error !..I don't know about the legal implications of this in the US, but in the UK this is an offence which the local law enforcement officers tend to clamp down ..its an easy pull for them...squids on Jap scrap with more money than sense. |

Funny that Keith Code has in the past said that about wheelies. His school now has a class dedicated to teaching wheelies! L8R, JM |

Sounds like Keith Code finally gave up on his wheelie ethics. Saw that jokers were going to do them anyway. Why not instruct on how to do them in the safest manner possible. |

Think of it as pure capitalism. Many wanted to learn which left an open niche in the training market. KC ain't no dummy! |

Wheelies are fun, just ask Bubba! I had a lot of fun pulling a wheelie in 2nd gear on a XB9R that was stock, just don't let Don Tilley know what I was doing to his demo bike. I don't see any problem pulling a wheelie on the XB9S. I might have to test ride one sometime or rent one. Eric The crazy one riding the Blast |
