The last couple of days have been record breaking temperatures for here. The tires felt "weird" Saturday and Sunday, especially the rear. At one point, I pulled over just to check them out. At certain times, they felt like I was on ribbed concrete or like a car on ice. It felt like the rear was subtly sliding over to another line. Clear roads, secondary highways, probably 70-80 mph, Michelin pilots road 2, lots of tread left. I was wondering if I should lower the air pressure on these hot days to make more of a contact patch. It's something Stoner mentioned, not that I'm anywhere near his league. Any ideas? |

It's something Stoner mentioned, not that I'm anywhere near his league. You've answered your own question there really. Road pressures recommended by tyre companies are designed to work in a variety of conditions, from pouring rain to high summer. Race tyres are completely different and run at MUCH lower pressures anyway. Most race tyres now use nitrogen to pressurise their tyres and this isn't affected by temperature changes. Stick to the manufacturers recommened pressures if riding on the road. |

Did you check your tire pressures in the heat? The pressure will vary greatly based on temp and other factors. |

Tire pressures are best checked/adjusted when tires are cold. Best done first thing in the morning before the sun has heated the tires. Heat (of any kind) has an affect tire pressure. |
