I'm gonna try it. My leave starts on Aug. 7th and I'm going to be riding my bike home to Iowa in preparations of getting out of the Marines Corps.

I'm going to start riding on the 7th at noon in San Marcos, California and ride through the night as to avoid the heat of the desert and keep going to the 1,000 mile mark in Denver,Colorado.

From there I'll make the "short" trip to Omaha, Nebraska to finish off the Bun-Burner.

If anyone would be willing to be my witness at these stops, i would much appreciate it, and the more witness i get the better. I'll be starting at Bigg's Harley Davidson in San Marcos around 1200 on the 7th. My end point for the 1,000 miles will be Freedom Harley Davidson in Denver, Colorado. I should be arriving there between 0800-0900 on the 8th. After i stop there, I'll be heading to Dillon Brother's Harley Davidson in Omaha, Nebraska. My time there should be between 1900-2000 on the 8th.

This will be a great challenge for me. My dad is the one that proposed the SoreSaddle 1000 and when i looked into it, i read about the Bun-Burner 1500.

I know my bike will be able to make it, she is in the best shape of her life right now. Just did Palomar Mountain today and she gave me NO problems at all. She has almost 11,000 miles on her.

Head a little North of Freedom and hit High Country H-D/BUELL. I'll be your witness.
Freedom doesn't do Buell.

The 8th is one of my days-off, but I'll run to the shop to meet you and be witness.

Tips from the IBA's web site:
http://www.ironbutt.com/tech/aowprintout.cfm

traveling at night is dangerous due to big varmints that are always at the wrong place at the wrong time....( they come out in the early evening and just before dawn...usually when you are sleepy)

might want to upgrade the headlight bulbs...the Sylvania's (Silver star) are bright but burn out over time - the GE's
Nighthawks)aren't as bright but last far longer...( WalMart carries both)

If you got a camel back/or a tank bag with a bladder plan on using it...
High speed might make the miles go by quickly, but big twins get very thirsty at high RPMs - (think about gas mileage - how far can you go before you're pushing)

buy a tire repair kit:
http://www.aerostich.com/prevent-or-repair/tire-re pair/tire-repair-kits

...Plan your flight and fly your plan...
if you want more tips...PM me
good luck!

Zach- I'll change it to High County HD, always like stopping at dealerships that are Buell friendly. I'll PM you a little closer to the departure date to get more information.

Ron- Thanks for tips and links. I got HIDs for my low beams right now and plan on getting another set for my highs in the next few weeks.

I didn't even think about the tire repair kit, I'll definitely grab one of those up.

I did a lot of calculations last night on how much time it would take me to get home.

Avg Speed: 65mph
Stop interval: every 120 miles
Stop length: 30 minutes

1000 miles will take me a total of 19.55 hours to complete, 1500 miles 29.33 hours, and then to finish off and get to 1750 miles, 34.21 hours.

Those times will give me a lot of slack too, i know the first few stops im only going to fill up and keep going so it shouldn't take the full 30 minutes, and i know my average speed through the desert will be closer to 100mph so that will cut down on time a lot. I'm sticking pretty firmly on the 120 miles per tank though, I've done this ride before (Iowa to Cali) and after awhile its hard even making it 100 miles without stopping.

Buy yourself a SPOT satellite messenger. You can program it to report your location to your dad's email account with a push of a button. It also has a 911 feature in case you get into trouble. It only weighs a few ounces.

I just did the SS1000 in May but did it in my VFR800. We did a loop from SoCal that took us across Arizona's Hwy 66, Winslow, Hwy 89, then back across the desert late at night. Since it was May it was damn cold in the desert.

Route 66 and Hwy 89 was simply awesome.

That last 200 miles was tough. Good luck. Keep your stops no more than 15 minutes. Bring lots of snacks and energy drinks.

Get a box of hard peppermints or Jolly Ranchers.
As good as sucking on a camelback but you don't pee as much.
I like the ones from Sonic Drive-Ins.

Lots of little breaks are better than a few long ones.
Last year Homecoming I rode home, straight-thru, ~1100 miles in 20 hours.
Longest stop was 20 minutes, got a couple of 10-15 minute cat-naps at mid-day.

Last 5-6 hours were in a rainsuit going thru the middle of the most amazing electrical storm I have ever seen.

Good luck, Godspeed, see you soon.

Zack

+1 on the jolly ranchers. Ive done some long hauls on the 1125r. several 700+ mile days, some consecutive. Beware of the the high speeds. Not because of the long arm of the law but because it can fatigue you early. If you have to ride tucked for long periods of time you will get sore and wont recover from a few 15 minute stops. If you dont ride tucked the wind pressure on your helmet will make you sore as well. My advice is to ride at a pace that the wind holds you up with no pressure on your wrists, move around while you ride, and take your breaks often but keep em short.

What do you have for the seat on your bike? Using the Buell Touring seat I can go an entire tank of gas (200+ miles) without stopping. The stock seat would hurt after a bit but it is still doable.

I plan on doing something similar late August, going from NY to Florida, it will be just over 1000 miles.

I plan on using my stock seat. I did the ride back in 2008 on my xb and it wasnt all that bad with a stock seat

Ive never had a problem with my stock seat. I dont recall ever having a sore butt. However, Im told I move around a lot. Not because Im uncomfortable, I like to move around before I get sore. Once your sore, your sore for the rest of the ride. Moving around helps all your muscles get a break. That will keep you using different back and neck muscles as well.

Do you have a throttlemeister? I dont but I will before my next long trip. Otherwise your right hand never really gets a break.

I'm in Vista. Sounds like a fun challenge. I will maybe try to head out with you and hang with until the first pit stop.

Tiberius Jr. - you may also want to consider these:
butt pad
http://www.alaskaleatheronline.com/servlet/StoreFr ont
grip puppies
http://www.casporttouring.com/store/merchant.mvc?
I like Hall's mentholated cough drops - the vapors will keep the anti matter reactor in your head running on full power!
...don't know if there is enough "real estate" to put HID high beams on the bike too - KISS ( Keep It Simple Simon)- I would just run upgraded Bulbs, since you already have the HIDs in low beams...
try and make as much mileage as you can in daylight and when you're fresh .... as time goes on the distance between stops will become shorter...it's a progressive thing...you may want "Plan B" - to reflect that type of "schedule".
Good luck
