Well my new fan didn't help the 01 X1 at all. I went for a ride this evening and as soon as the motor gets heated up, she started missing. If I come to a stop the idle is very erratic.....between 1000 and 1500rpm, up and down. Motor even sounds like it's not firing correctly. It usually idles around 800rpm. When your cruising around 3000rpm it definitely has a miss or a little sputter....Any suggestions?? IAT maybe? That little bugger does seem to have oil on it....Can you clean these? Should I move it?? As the evening wore on it sure didn't seem to get any better. I rode almost to dark. I thought the cooler air would help, but it didn't. When I fire the bike up cold it runs great, no misses and great idle.....Suggestions please........Bike has Buell race kit on it.

Thanks.................jim

Is this possibly a case of a leaky intake manifold gasket? If you haven't replaced them recently, it may be worth checking, since they are prone to failure.

I'll give it a look this weekend. Bike ran good earlier this year, but it wasn't as warm outside as it is now.........

i agree with the bad intake gasket idea, or loose mount hardware.
a bugger to check but thats where id start.
when was the last time you had your TPS calibrated?

Never had the TPS calibration checked. Never had an issue before. I am going to check the gaskets and more than likely just replace them.......They are pretty cheap. Bike still has less than 5000 miles on it.

Don't know.....How would the timing have suddenly affected how it's running?? The bike ran great up until this point.......Haven't had it to the dealer in a long, long time......so I really don't know.......

I agree.......anytime I go there to get parts they make me feel like the red headed step child....Which surprises me because my closest dealer is Hal's and they were a major sponsor of Buell racing.......Now they have to look for the parts book every time I go there.........BS......I have been doing all of my own work since the separation.......

just a shot in the dark, but i would also check your batt.
see what it does with a load on it.
my bike ran like crap when the batt was getting old.
"easiest first"
i love that motto

FYI:
The "Fireman" is a well respected Buell Racer
and is quite knowledgeable about all things buell.

look at your plugs is an alternate way to check for an air leak. On your Q yes the engine temperature and intake air temp sensors can cause running problems, so can loose grounds, and weak batteries

the intake manifold and injector orings are both leak paths OH on the X1 & S3 FI bikes check that the hose barb on the bottom of the Throttle body is capped or plugged too.

Good luck

Intake seals and TPS -- TPS can just go whacko.... (that is why I put a Mitkuni on mine, got tired of ECMSpy, adjustments and TPS crap...) I would to intake seals first and after that TPS... almost 100% it is intake seals however.

Erratic idle when bike is getting really hot, like slow or stopped traffic = intake seals.

I got stuck in traffic this week and that is what mine is doing...time for new intake seals.

Should be considered PM every two years from what I've read.

Another thing:
I just replaced my engine temperature sensor and O2 sensor on the '00 and no more missing at speed.

Where is the best place to get these from?? I thought we can get the 02 from the auto parts store, but the temp sensor??

I got the intake gaskets installed. The old ones didn't look anything like the new ones, but they seem to work fine. The bike seemed to idle higher, so I lowered it some. Bike runs great so far. We had a cool front come through last evening so I don't know if the seals helped yet. I also cleaned the IAT with some electric parts cleaner........I'm heading to bike night after work today at Quaker Steak....we'll see how it goes, but we're only in the 70's today.......

try our sponsors for your parts
in particular American Sport Bike

Most of the FI parts except the ecm, pump, manifold and TB are car parts

Jkgonzo:
I got/get my parts at American Sport Bike. Don't forget the engine temperature sensor socket that they sell. $20 and worth it.

When you get to the O2 sensor, I suggest breaking off the back end of it where the wire comes out and using either a 7/8 socket with a couple of extensions or a 22mm socket. Makes for a fast replacement.

my x1 had a stumble below 3000 rpm, afv dropped to 86 and rpm was hanging at around 2000. Turns out it was the O2 sensor connector, the pin was a loose fit inside the connector. The Ego volts showing in ecmspy was jumping all over the place.
Dumped the connector and soldered the wires together, Problem solved.
O2 sensors, bosch part 12014 available at most auto retailers

I'll check for that Snowbees, thanks.

Bike still has erratic idle when it gets hot. I got caught in bumper to bumper for about a half hour yesterday and it did act up once. Not as much as it did before changing the intake gaskets, but it also has not been that warm outside since the change. The fan was running because my right leg was baking from the heat, but that's ok. I will change out the O2 and the IAT sensors next.......
On the ride home from Quaker Steak the temps were in the 60's and she ran great.......hopefully I'll locate the issue soon, temps are going back up into the 80's and 90's for this weekend and next week.

Change out the engine temp. sensor first before the IAT. I'd also change out the O2 sensor while you're in there.

Well I got the engine temp sensor and the O2 changed out.........still the same issue. Once she gets hot it sputters at speed. And at idle, very erratic. Nothing has changed.......This problem came on, did not do it earlier this year. I took it to Road America for the bike races this year......drove it there, ran it on the track for a while, then drove it home.....no issues.......I guess it's time to get the computer stuff and start checking out the settings.....

if those changes dont fix it id suggest getting the engine smokin hot, to the point its running rough and do a compression test.
id also stip her down naked to offer as much access to the engine as possible, then (running) spray the suspect areas with a water/soap mix. when spraying on the intake side and it runs worse= intake leak, bubbles on hot side= crack/blown gasket.
maybe a blown cylinder head gasket or (shudder) a cracked head.
hope im wrong.

Gonzo came over yesterday and we jumpered the 4-pin diagnostic plug to check his DTC's.

DTC 33 is showing up. Fuel pump.

Before putting in a new fuel pump, I'd check the wiring from the fuse box to the fuel pump and all grounds too.

Jim (Gonzo) I should have the 1125r buttoned up this early afternoon if you want to stop by again and we can pull your tank cover off, check the wiring underneath and then wring out the wiring back to the fuse box.

So from what I've read on this site is that what my engine is doing when it gets hot is 'normal' (as per Preybird1) to protect the engine from damage. So then my questions are, what is this setting known as, where can you find it, what should it be set at and can it be adjusted?? ECMspy I suppose........Well time to purchase one. Who has them and is the most complete??

I also had a purchased a '99 X1 brand new and put over 10,000 miles on it, it never did this, so it has to be an adjustable setting somewhere.....now if I can only find it...
