I just installed the Buell fan kit on my 2001 X1. To me the thermostat switch should be mounted to the rear cylinder head not the front as indicated in the instructions. As we all know, the rear cylinder gets and stays much hotter than the front. I would think by mounting the switch to the rear head would cause the fan to run more......So what?? Also after installing the fan kit it seems to severely limit the air flow through the factory scoop to the rear cylinder. In fact, the bike seems to run worse, or the fuel injection is more erratic with the fan blocking the scoop.
When I get to a stoplight, no fan but very erratic idle.......Any opinions?? Anyone have the same issues??

I like the way it looks with the scoop and the air box....kinda makes it look beefier, badass if you will.........

What direction is the fan blowing?
Is it fighting the air coming in the left side duct?

That having been said....

When I took off the airbox and left side scoop, I was surprised to find that my bike seemed to run cooler.

I did kinda like the way it originally looked and have always disliked the tank cover's edges allowing the exposed fuel cell to show
but for me, the ergos were improved with less knee to knee distance.

The fan was meant to cool the intake to compensate for the low octane fuel available in Japan. IMHO it also dumps quite a bit of heat off the engine in the process, though I've been told I am wrong. I didn't notice a hotter running engine, quite the opposite.

I have always wanted one of those fan set ups. But with the amount of heat this bike puts off i don't want burn my leg more. If the wind is blowing a certain direction all the heat off the rear header cooks my right calf.

These COOLING FANS are nothing new to HARLEY-DAVIDSON Engines ...

They were and have been used on POLICE ENGINES way before FUEL INJECTION ...

The FAN is for COOLING THE ENGINE !!!

It is more important on FUEL INJECTION ENGINES simply because the FUEL INJECTION "EPA" requirements which are way TOO LEAN on the fuel mapping ...

JUST WHY DO YOU THINK CARS SUCH BIG RADIATORS AND FANS ???

HINT: THEY ARE MAPPED TOO LEAN, "PLUS" they are shoe horned into a very closed in engine compartment ...

It blows the same direction that the wind comes through the scoop.......

May be I have a thick skin but I have never had any issues with the heat from the engine even in 90+ days and my engine temperature has never been over 175. May be its because I always wear long pants and boots/hi-tops and don't spend too much time idling in traffic. One thing I noticed was the engine temperature dropped 10-15 degrees when I switched to Royal Purple. Worth giving it a shot.

Like I said, with the location of the thermostat switch it is constantly getting wind blown onto it and the fan is not running much. When I get caught in traffic and the ambient temp is in the 80's the motors idle is very erratic. I am going to move the switch to the rear and see how it works there.
One of my buddies has a Ulysses and when his fan comes on and I'm next to him it seems like it is going to blow me over it's so powerful, mine is not near as strong......

The heat doesn't bother me, it's my fuel injection that doesn't like it much.....My last oil change I used Amsoil. Only difference that I noticed is the amount of blowby in my catch can dropped considerably.......

The fan on the XB bikes was in fact designed to cool the engine, is a whole lot more powerful, and is ducted to more effectively cool the rear cylinder. The X1/S3 fan simply blows on the intake manifold. It's a different animal. The volume of air the fan moves is insignificant compared to the air moving around the engine while moving. The fan helps while you're stopped or moving very slowly. You may get it to run longer if you move the sensor to the rear head, but I don't think you're going to get more effective cooling by doing so.

The XB Models have more fins on the heads and cylinders because the engine is too shrouded(plus a two stage fan like cars) !!!

A bigger oil tank(or larger oil system) will help also as the oil does a lot of cooling(oil cooler if you have one) ...

"i" run a FAN, OIL COOLER, and a RETURN LINE Oil Filter on my 1998 3T, just PM me for PICTURES ...

I guess I must have another issue to cause the fuel injection to act up so much. I don't know what the issue could be especially when there are a lot of X1's out there dealing with much higher temps on a normal basis...I'll see how the fan helps if it runs more......or maybe I should get an XB fan in there??

If it was possible to RE-MAP to a 12 to 1 fuel air ratio, not only would your engine run better, "BUT" it would also run cooler ...

With timing mark set just coming into the timing plug hole, idle mixture screw 2 1/2 turns out from the seat, #45 low speed jet, #200 hight speed jet, M2 needle raise 0.050 thousands, radius'ed slide, and accelerator pump removed is how my 1997 S3T is also set up ...
