Well, today I removed my Buell Pro Series Exhaust and Mikuni HSR42 and reinstalled my rejetted CV40 and stock exhaust. I like it! My butt dyno says I didn't give up much performance in all but the highest revs and it is smooooooth! Does anyone have hard data to support/refute my initial reaction? Now I am riding in the Pacific Northwet on on often-wet and slippery forest twisty roads and I am not in need of maximum power but smooth power is what I need. Who knows how these set-ups actually compare by the numbers? | ||

Dave: I've got two X1 Lightnings. '99 has a ForceWinder, Race ECM, and V&H muffler. '00 is totally stock. '99 for smoother accel, better top end. But the '00 is just as capable up to the high end in 4th gear. Either one puts a smile on my face. And I'm 57. | ||

Yup, It's so quiet I might need a really loud air horn to get attention when I need it. Funny thing is that I think it might be almost as quick as before. Definitely nice controllable power delivery too. | ||

Funny you should do that. After almost 10 yrs with the Buell race exhaust on my '98 S3T I finally had it and went back to the stock system. What a joy! Like you said, you only loose HP in the higher revs. Reg Kitrell did a comparison in "Battle 2 Win" between the race system vs the stock system on a '98 and he too found the stock system stayed with the race system until 70 mph where the race system would then pull away, but only by 10 ft to 110 mph! I can live with that and so can my ears. | ||

when i pulled my bike out of storage for the year i had it idling behind my house and the neighbor that has his business next door tried to come over and complain about the noise. I told him go pound sand and i could care less about the noise. It was the middle of the day!........I love my D&D system. | ||

That is one of the reasons why I wanted quieter pipes; I want to get along with my neighbors. Besides, they are nice people and I don't want to be the neighborhood "Fag" (see South Park episode by that name for details). Also, I want to be able to avoid attracting the wrong kind of attention from our local LEOs. Tickets are expensive and I have other uses for my cash. It seems that many people equate noise with speed. I think that is why my quiet bike does does not seem to trigger the "speeding motorcycle" response in others - even when I am on the throttle. Best of all is that now, in "stealth mode" I can go a lot faster and farther than before with a lot less fatigue. | ||

i do agree , but i love my d&d pipe it is loud as hell and sounds great but i can not get on it without thinking everybody knows i am ripping around.. | ||

I like having a D&D on the X1, but if my XT was that loud it would drive me crazy. They are different bikes for very different purposes.. | ||

I rode my X1 with stock set up for a while before switching to V&H and Forcewinder. They almost "feel" like two different bikes. Noise level aside, in my opinion the stock felt a little flat in the 2500-3500 RPM range with a noticeable dip in torque. The power delivery is a lot more linear with the mods. And the sound of the pre-downshift blip is priceless. | ||

No plans to sell the carb but I just saw one new-in-box on ebay for $299 shipped. Mikuni HSR 42 Easy Kit #4211 I have the carb and pipe combination dialed in and they work well together so I plan to keep them together in a box in case I want to convert it back. I recommend the HSR 42 highly. It works great and at $299 it is a good deal too. | ||

Two of my four Buells have the stock pipe, and I enjoy riding them more than the other two. It is nice riding around stealth. I can be traveling at a good clip, see my radar detector go off, and get back down to reasonable speeds without the cop even putting down his newspaper. I just wish the stock cans on my bikes didn't rust away so fast, my Blast looks like I stole a pipe off the Titanic. | ||

I have the stock pipe on my M2 and honestly, I enjoy the sound. I'd like a little more bark, but not much more. Now when my SSR shit the bed and shed aluminum and billet parts all over northern GA, THAT was loud. Pretty bad when you can scare a ZX-14 off the road with your exhaust. |
