I hardly ever use the rear brake. But, my rear brake pedal has been acting weird for a couple weeks. Its at rest position would float up higher where I had to lift my foot to get on top of it. Today as I pulled into work, I noticed that the rear disk was making an audible moan and the rotor was dragging and very hot. There is no free play in the pedal. I have to get this thing the 15 miles home. Can I bleed off some of the brake fluid and have it be rideable? What's the underlying cause of this? To much brake fluid expanding when it gets hot? Any suggestions how to get this home? Pull the rear caliper and bungee it to the frame? | ||

use a screw driver and push pads off the disc, ride home and dont use the rear brake. Once your home, strip it down and clean it up, make sure the fluid is at a good level (not high nor low) Then use it a bit more frequently to keep it from seizing. | ||

i'd try pushing the pads off the disc first but if yours is like mine(was able to light a cig off the disc) you may be beyond that point so removal will be the next option. thankfully mine happened while i still had warranty so they picked it up and wound up replacing the master, caliper, disc, line and pads. there's been some speculation about the master having an alignment issue with one of the seals and the bleed back hole i dunno. i can tell you that the rear brake on mine must have been bad from the git as the replacement felt soooo much better than the original ever did. | ||

If the fluid has been in there a long time doesn't brake fluid absorb water. And water when it gets hot expands. Which would cause the caliper to drag and the pedal to move upwards | ||

The piston inside the mastercylinder is most likely corroded,just push pads back off of rotors so their not dragging and don't use the rear brake.Order a new mastercylinder. | ||

Mine dragged a little for awhile. All i did was push REALLY hard on the pedal a couple of times and it freed it up. I would give it a try to see, worked for me and hasnt bound once since | ||

Thanks guys. I pushed the pads back in the caliper with a screw driver and rode it home without using the rear brake. It rode fine the whole way with no dragging. When I got it home I flushed the fluid. The stuff that came out was cloudy so I'm hoping it was contaminated with water and will now work fine. I'll ride it today to see. Thanks again. You guys are fantastic. | ||

Rode it all around today. Stomped on the rear brake a couple times, forcefully, to move all the internal bits around that might have been sticking. I was able to lock up the rear tire which I've never been able to do before. Anyway, with the new fluid and some aggressive use, all seems well with the rear brake. Thanks. | ||

Thanks for the post up, I currently have the same problem, so I'll try flushing the fluid as well. |
